ST KILDA legend Robert Harvey met new coach Scott Watters but it appears increasingly likely he will leave the club.

Collingwood has sounded out Harvey, an assistant under Ross Lyon last season, and a decision is expected within days.

..

New Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley is a big fan of Harvey and Magpies president Eddie McGuire has confirmed the club is interested in him.

Thoughts?

Obviously one of the best players of his generation, along with Bucks, Voss, Hird & co. Aside from that, regardless of not being considered for the top job, would have to have some value at the Pies no?

Dual presser tomorrow, with Barnes as ruck coach and Harvey as midfield coach?

And yes, I know we usually don't have pressers for assistant coaches, but heck, it would piss 2 of the most arrogant, self loving football clubs off so much it would be worth it.:D

There are two types of assistant coaches: those who's star is on the rise (waiting for the top job -eg Neeld, Watters) & those who will remain assistant coaches (probably a safer career path to take/accept - Hinkley, Richardson).
I think Harvey falls into cat two - has been in the assistant coaching system for three years (Carlton, Saints) & is not ready for the big job yet - if ever.
If Bucks & Walsh rate him, then welcome aboard.

Here we go, Harves is no good, Luke Ball is no good.

Common denominator, club favourite walks away to join enemy.

That's Harves fault is it?

Lenny Hayes going down, no personnel improvement in off season (mid wise), off field distractions, shit game plan (that's not sustainable) the fact that other teams improved & passed you.....etc etc.

But yeah it's all Harves the line coach.

Over the past 5 years when collingwood hires assistant coaches they have all been JUST EXELLENT. So far with Hart and Eade we again seem to be 2/2.

If we hire Harvey, the right man will of been hired.

I know nothing about him as a coach, ill reserve a decision till the higher powers make one, as they have made so many amazing ones (neeld mckenna watters scott brown.. think i mighta missed somone else)

Everyone bagged us for getting Matty Lappin to the club, Carlton supporters told us he was a shit coach, yet Travis Cloke went from a good marking forward, to the best power forward in the AFL in one season under Lappin.

If the club believes Harvey, Barnes, Ronald McDonald or the Easter Bunny will make the best assistant coaches, I'll trust them, because let's face it, we have more ex assistant coaches who have senior coaching gigs at the moment then you can count on one hand.:)

Arhh......Bucks & also Laidley (Collingwood assistant 2002 - North coach 2003-2009).

Not a fan to be honest, don't think he's much chop at all. Buckley has spoken at length of his admiration for Robert Harvey, my gut feeling is this appointment is because of that, not because he's a great coach.

Mate you can ask just about any Saints supporter. Didn't rate him as a coach during the season and don't now. Compare our midfield from last year to this year. Pretty big slide.

I really don't think that supporters are the best people to ask re internal football matters at any club.
Only two groups opinions count - the football department & the players - everyone else is guessing/or listening to scuttlebutt.

I agree that the club knows what it's doing and nearly always makes the right moves. I wouldn't however relate Lappin being at the club with Cloke having a good year to say he's a good assistant coach. I think Lappin was harshly and unfairly criticised when he joined. I'm not sure anyone is saying the same things about Harvey either, but people like myself are wondering a little.

Have not heard from anyone that he is a good coach and the 'experts' were less than keen on him becoming St Kilda's next coach. Do not want him.

Want if only for culture's sake.
I think he will fit the culture of the club very well, and will be low-ego, fired up to perform in a role of turning players who are at the peak of their game, to an even higher level.

Face it, could we get in anyone else who Pendlebury, Swan, Thomas, etc could learn a major amount about being a gun midfielder from?

The structure if it occurs doesn't look that bad. The key to me being structure rather than individuals in it.

Buckley
Eade
Hart-Harvey-Lappin
McRae-Lockyer
Rocca-Tapping-Hahn-Barnes/Flanigan

A few years ago, we hired one of those Daniher Bros. I dont know which one. They all look the same to me. It must be because their parents were brother and sister...

Anyway, I remember that when he got interviewed, he appeared to be a dill. He got dumped after a year.....

I suppose we do make the odd mistake ..

Terry Daniher was an assistant coach (in the AFL coaching system for 8 years).
Essendon: 2000-2002
Collingwood: 2003
St Kilda: 2004-2005
Carlton: 2006-2007

He is a country boy (who looks & speaks like a country boy), however he has great experience & is a down to earth straight shooter, with a wealth of football knowledge. Probably no longer the 'type' of assistant coach that clubs seek nowadays (well educated, well spoken, coaching professionals - like Watters). If he was a 'dill' he would not have been employed by 4 different AFL clubs. Many assistants move around to various clubs - maybe they are not the right fit or the head coach wants a change or maybe his 'message' has been delivered i.e he has given all he can & time to move on.
Essendon, Collingwood & StKilda all played in finals whilst he was there (Carlton were too busy bottoming out after their salary cap cheating & were in draft pick collection mode).

Pretty sure TD got the best out of Tarrant up forward that year, and that Taz was pretty upset when he left for the Saints.
Not the worst footy brain that's for sure; just a bit too laconic for some.

Reminds me of Mick McGuane. Has a brilliant footy brain but unlikely to get a coaching job in the AFL.

TD was sacked after he criticized Mick for playing Jason Cloke at CHF in the 03' GF. He did pretty well with our forward setup that year.

Yea um the saints really want to keep him, and collingwood really wanna get him. U sir have no idea

Maybe ur midfield slumped due to an injury to ur best midfielder.. hmm

Confirmed pies have put a good offer to him
