Was thinking about how dire the situation of second tier football has been since the demise of the VFA. One idea I have never seen mentioned is the creation of a Victorian State Football League (ie similar to the VPL in soccer), where the best of the metro and country teams (ie EDFL, FDL, VCFL etc) would have teams competing in an elite 12/14 team competition with a promotion and relegation system.
There are some very powerful metro teams out there (and country) with lots of money. Those teams that can't cut it would simply get relegated and drop back into their local league. At least there would be some serious passion and rivalries out there. Sure, it might be a few notches lower than the VFL, but it would be sure to generate some interest? Surely seeing Ballarat v Mildura, Wodonga v Bendigo etc would fire up local rivalries?
You could even see the former VFA standalone teams drop back into this league one day. Maybe I'm being simplistic, bit it just defies belief how there isn't even a statewide country league at the minimum. Just putting it out there.
