Stopped one step short, and spoke to head of the department.

Basically admitted I wasn't going anywhere due to financials and work (didn't mention the $250 a week I spent on grog) and promptly withdrew from my course.

Not terrifying at all.

Yeah... in my first year. I failed eight of nine exams in the first semester - most probably because I spent more time in the Oxford Scholar pub across the road from uni than actually at uni. Somehow pulled it together to pass all the subjects by the end of the year. The pub must have gone broke in second semester.

Its a piece of ****. If you're in first year, just lay on some sort of excuse like its your first year and uni has been difficult to adjust to because its different to high school, but you think you're starting to work it out.

For later years, the good old family trauma i.e. parents are divorcing, or relationship trauma, or friend committing suicide during the year are a dead lock. Most academics have their heads so far up there arse and are so inept in human relations, they won't know how to deal with and let you off with a stern warning to wise up.

Hope it helps and good luck.
