I didn't see much of the game but one thing that gets me is the number of minutes Goorjain gives some of the players in his squad. It's like an u12's domestic game and he's worried some parents will be angry at him if their kid doesn't get a run. Pick your best 7 and then an 8th plater and run with them. Allow the team to get some momentum.

I also don't understand how he's starting CJ ahead of Mills. CJ is a waste of space and never looks like generating anything. Mills is exciting, looks to create offensive and has the heart and want to win. When he’s on the court the entire team looks more energised. This is just the point spot. Lets not get into the rest.

I just think we have more talent than our performances are showing, and it spends far too much time sitting and watching rather than on the court.

okay frustration is vented

Its not really his fult that most of his supposed "star" players are playing like arse, and therefore has to up the rotations.

I think he places too much emphasis on reputation, and has his team already picked before team selection. I really don't know why Sav is in the team?

I didn't see any of the lead-up games, so I can't really make much of an informed comment here, but does anyone else think the offense is pretty similar to what you'd run if you were coaching under 12s? A bunch of passes and screen-and-rolls round the perimeter followed by a jumpshot or a pass into the post with the shot-clock running down.

Almost no penetration (other than Mills obviously), very predictable cuts and just a general lack of creativity. It's been disappointing to watch.

We aren't shooting well from the arc, and you almost need to score from outside in FIBA rules. We need some better shooters.

I said it before the Olympics, we aren't getting out fo the groups with this squad, regardless of Goorjian

Agree - and with all due respect to Sean Redhage but i don’t know why he was selected either. In my opinion the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th place on a team should be for the kids coming through, especially if that team isn’t likely to be competing for an Olympic medal. And let’s be real, the likelihood of this current Boomer team competing for a medal wasn’t overly high. We should have fast tracked a few players for the future and aimed at winning a medal in Turkey (WC 2010) or London (2012).

I am over this idea about rewarding players for good NBL season – we need to identify good players for the future. We should have identified a roster of 8 players who could have taken us to the quarter finals stage and then have 4 players for the future.

The ball has to go inside to Bogut, Anderson, Neilson and Anstey and have them dominate the paint before outside shooter can get free. We are not shooting well at the moment because they guards are just jacking it up after one pass. We need to run an efficient motion offence.

Why was it so easy for Gaze, Heal and co to shoot so may 3 back in the day? Because Bradtke, Luc Longley and Andrew Vlahos were so effective inside. Dump the ball inside to the big man and have the guards move (not a lot of movement in our current offence) without the ball. And then have the big man kick it out to the free man. However the offence had to go through Andrew Bogut as he is out best player, no wonder he is pissed, he never touches it on offence.

IMO he needs to be moved on. He has had his time and has given us nothing.

It also shows how soft it is for Australia to actually qualify for the Olympics

I agree with that and BA should be looking at the FFA model and take basketball into Asia and qualify through that region.

BA are kidding themselves and have attempted to foil the general public...while they keep pumping up the local talent, what they are not saying is the sheer volume of Euro players making massive in ways into the NBA...and not just playing minutes, but actually becoming the face of the NBA....

so while BA see us as having good International players..We have good quality players, one in the NBA (Bogut) but our best are playing in the Euro league (Nelson, Anderson, Newley) one (Mills), is playing the collegian system, and the rest are in the NBL....not a good mix, we need to have atleast 3 NBA players, and not just taking up space. Impact players. I thought before the Olympics started that if we made top 5 we would have done well..

Top 8 now seems realistic at best...

How many NBA players did the Greeks have when they knocked off the USA in the World Championships?

unsure, how many were playing in the NBL?

the point of it is, their league is 5 times that of the NBL!

better league breeds better players...its also the reason why the NBA see's the Euroleague as a feeder system to the NBA.

EDIT: none judging by this!

I thought he played the 06/07 season at Houston and went back to Europe last year?

Would not be surprised if i am wrong however.
You are correct.

How many European countries at these games have more than one NBA star, though? As mentioned, Greece don't have any NBA players, Lith only have Kleiza, who is good player, but not a 'star', Croatia none, Russia only have AK47, Germany only have Dirk.....

The only teams in Beijing that could claim to have more than one would be Spain and Argentina*, and even then, they both only have one 'star' and a few nice role players (Calderon would be close though).

*I know that ARG aren't from Europe, but they play the same style and most of their players play in Europe anyway.

** I know I didn't mention Chine and Yao/Yi.

We have a 15-10 NBA C; one the best players in the whole of Europe in Anderson, who hasn't been in the NBA for the 3 or 4 years only because he earns more money in Europe than he would in the NBA; Neilson plays in the Euroleague; Newley was drafted by HOU and helped his Greek team qualify for the Euroleague this year; Mills obviously has taking this comp by storm and probably has put himself right up in NBA contention; then we have Jawai with the Raps, Ogilvy is a likely 1st rounder, Bruce was an NBA lock for the first couple of years of his college career before he fell off a bit, Maric was right on the bubble of being drafted this year.....

This country has more than enough talent. The only thing really holding this team back is the style of play that Goorj is using. It doesn't work at international level, and it just doesn't suit this sort of side. I wouldn't be suprised if the players have stopped listening to Goorj....

****

As for going through Asia to qualify, I don't see the point. Iran were the Asian champions this year and we have accounted for them easily enough. The only other team who could give us some trouble would be China, and we also have their measure. NZ would be almost on the same level as both of them.

(Sorry for such a long post.)

Good points, Well thought up, and well written.

But hence why I think BA are kidding the Aust public, our league is not that strong and therefore the quality players who are going to play massive parts in the Olympics for us are Euro based, or (1) in the NBA...but i think you hit it well, Anderson, Neilson and Mills are key players for us.

Watching now the Russian game the style has changed to suit the team, fast, first choices, up tempo ball..

yeah I love UP Tempo B-Ball :thumbsu: Really did well today to double or even triple team Kirilenko at all cost also did a good job on Ford as well.
You mean Holden?

I think Russia tried to pass it to AK47 too many times.
