Looking through the year book last night and found this stat interesting and surprising.

Hase was our top handballer for the season with 328, but in the Effective Handballs tally he wasn't even in the top 5, so he's had 328 handballs and less than 140 of them are effective! Actually our top 3 handballers (Hase, Dodd and Sandi) aren't featured in the top 5 Effective Handballs.

The best results were Schammer with 196 overall and 162 effective and Greg Broughton had less than 190 handballs in total but 164 effective ones!

I guess alot of Hase and Sandi's handballs are in tight and under extreme pressure, as are Dodd's (and the fact that his decision making is crap), but Schammer and Broughton's would've been too?

I think it comes partly down to composure to take the correct option under pressure. Hase, Sandi and Tequila are working in congested areas at ball ups and throw ins where there's always a chance of a hand/arm/body getting in the way - and not just the oppositions or the target being nudged off the line of the ball. Broughton and Dodd working at clearing the back aren't working with the with the same density of players for the most part.
So - no excuses for Dodd obviously but it would be interesting to see it the ratio of ineffective to effective hand passes improved as the season went on or that it was particular teams/play styles caused the discrepency.

Another notable point on the stats was goalkickers. Pav 28, McPaharlin 20, Others Mundy, Balla, Mayne, Peake(!!), Des were in the 10-15 range I think. We will need a vast improvement there and I think we will get it. Our targets last year were non existant. I think Pav ranked 45th or so in the league.

And another thing... on stats alone I think hase deserved 2 years. Bit of a slap in the face for him after finishing so highly in stats and contested ball. It's all very well the club saying Not Good enough but others were not chalelinging him for game time in the centre square.

How many of those hand balls were in contested situations though? He is an inside player, it is to be expected.

Haselby only deserves 1 year. If he was so valuable he would have been snapped up by another club when he shopped himself around.

If he was as inspirational as some imagine he would be in our leadership group

I see Hasleby the most underrated player at freo. I rate him the 1-2 most important midfielder. I would only even think about rating him behind Rhys Palmer:D:D:thumbsu::thumbsu:

Against I guess.

For our best midfielder not to be part of a bloated leadership group that includes some crabs tells you something about how respected he would appear to be inside the club.

Yep, he's really pissed off the club with the way he went about his contract negotiations. I suppose to a certain extent he's made his bed, he's got to sleep in it...
