No in fact it is a cable which is higher in bandwidth than other connections (i.e. composite, component, S-Video) so allows high definition sources (Blu-Ray, HDTV etc) to display on an HD screen.
If you don't have an HD screen and an HD input they're somewhat superfluous. If you do, however, then they will help you get the best picture possible.

Surprises me, i'd have thought you'd just get your minions to set up your home entertainment system, rather than fussing yourself with the particulars of it...

your internet connection 1.5Mbps, maybe 8Mbps and if lucky 24Mbps
older computer networks run at 10Mbps
newer ones 100Mbps
Absolutely top class ones and only for certain devices (servers) run at 1Gbps (1000Mbps)
HDMI 1.3 runs at 10.2Gbps (10,200Mbps).
This is seriously quick. That is a metric boat load of data. Not so good over longer distances but fibre is good for that.

And any salespeople trying to flog their Monster HDMI cables are selling snake oil. There are plenty of alternative options available online for HDMI cables, that wont cost anywhere near $100+ for a 1m cable, and they perform exactly the same.
