Hey guys.

I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a head unit with built in GPS/Sat Nav. Obviously it would have a big screen like the DVD player head units.

If there is such a thing does it fit into a normal head unit slot. I currently have a Sony CDX-GT250S. it is superseded now but physically the same size as this one: http://www.sony.com.au/xplod/catalog/product.jsp?categoryId=22000

If i can it would be good to get something to slot straight in where my existing head unit is. If they don't come this small then i can replace the panel as at the moment it is just a little storage compartment under the head unit.

I am looking at buying a GPS anyway but thought that if something like i want does exist, it would be worth a look at.

Cheers

There are three ways you can go about this.

Your first option is to try and find a GPS unit with a video out option, and then plug that directly into the back of a DVD Player. While something like this will fit your head unit slot, it would only be a viable option if you either have a DVD Player in your car or a GPS with video out. Assuming that you don't, there are two types of units which you can go out and buy which will suit your needs.

You can buy a head unit which pretty much does anything you can throw at it. GPS, Bluetooth, DVD, MP3, Hard drive. They range from the very cheap (http://www.oztion.com.au/vshops/item.aspx?itemid=2883644&tid=, something like this would set you back around $600 off ebay. But the quality would be pretty shit) to the very expensive ($2500+)

If it was me, I'd have a look at something like the Pioneer AVIC-F900BT. That is a US product, but you could pick up any number of similar units in Australia for around $1k. It's probably a bit more expensive than something you can pick up on ebay but you will know that the quality of a Pioneer/Sony/etc unit will more than make up for it.

If you look hard enough there will be units which can fit that slot, but the majority of them would be double din, which means that you would have to rip out something to fit it in. For the majority of cars (Falcon/Commodore and the like) it will be no problem, but some of the late 90's and on european cars you might struggle with.

The other type of unit is something that is pretty new to the market, the Eclipse AVN2210p. Essentially, it is a portable GPS unit intregrated with the car. For what it is, it's pretty expensive ($1100-ish) and it dosen't look as good as something more conventional, but it might be something that suits you.

Thanks heaps mate. I was looking at some pioneer ones but i didn't like the appearance of the interface. Im being picky but if im gonna spend 1000+ i want something that looks good. I might just look for a NAVMAN with video out then get a DVD head deck. I like the way NAVMANs workand look so that might be the best way out of it. Cheers again for your help :thumbsu:
