I think he shall stay. He is only pushing up his price and I am sure the other WA clubs are not prepared to lose players such as Gardiner and Pavlich. Pavlich will more than likely go home to SA where Gardiner is untouchable by the WCE. I can't speak on behalf of the violets, but at WC, Gardiner is a player who we hope to build a good team around and make an attack on the finals in the next few years.

Best of luck in the finals Lions. I am hoping for a Port vs Brisbane GF.....;)

it would be just stupid for the lions to let him go when they took the chance on him @ 1st & have worked with him to get him to this stage that he is @ now... but u know... they have done stuff like this before....

GOOD LUCK DESSIE!!!!

Stocka:

At the end of the contracted period the player is free to go. He has no obligation to the club as the terms of his contract have expired.

The rules of the AFL however provide that an uncontracted player can only be picked up in the draft or as a trade to the club he is happy to go to.

I find it odd that you think it is better that the club get nothing for such a player rather than trade him to the club of his choice. That is cutting off your nose to spite your face.

We would all love to see Dessy stay - I sit in Bay 70!!!!! but if for whatever reason he wants to go back to WA and we cannot persuade him to stay what purpose does it serve either party to play such silly games.

What if the trade was Dessy to Eagles, Judd to St Kilda and Reiwoldt to Brisbane? Would you be performing self mutilation to teach Dessy a lesson. In the unhappy event that Dessy left would you reject such a trade? I think not.

That would probably work in the eagles favour. Trade a 3rd round draft pick plus 1st round pre-season pick to a bottom 4 team for their 1st pre-season pick (top 4 pick guaranteed). Would give us a decent chance of snaring Dessie.

I don't think he'll leave brisbane, but if by the odd chance he does, brisbane would still probably get a 1st round pick and a decent player (with Freo and WCE competing for him, lions could get a fairly good deal).

NO!

I don't think neither WC nor Saints would trade such quality players for a player wanting to come home. If dessie wants home, his market value drops dramatically.

Thanks for joining, clown.

As far as I'm concerned, M.Michael is one of the best full backs going around in the league (if not the best). How people can not rate him as a star is beyond me.

Whether or not Pavlich is a good player, I would much rather Michael at FB, and so would most other Lions supporters.

Someone disagrees with your opinion and there labelled a clown. I think we all know the only clown around here is you my man. My comments were my opinion, you have yours, no need to start insulting people.

I think you would find as good a FB as Michael is, most clubs would take Pavlich over Michael any day of the week. As far as FB's go though Michael is pretty good.

Des in navy blue...don't know if I could stomach that one.

Are you always this sensitive, or perhaps you're just polishing up on your "snagisms" for some excitement in the off-season?

At any rate, I found the condescending nature of your previous post to be just as offensive as the term "clown" could ever be (which, by the way, I didn't mention in an offensive manner at all).

Yes, but apart from the fact that he is a good player, why would we want to pick Pavlich? Where is he going to play for us?

As I said earlier, I am yet to see a good reason as to "why" and "where" we would play such a player, and as to why this would justify trading Headland.

Headland, IMO, is far more valuable to the Lions, than Pavlich would be.

Once you are in the draft, from what I understand (and from how the media always portray the situation), you have to go to the club that drafts you (agreeing on terms for a contract, I believe, is a different matter, of course).

Therefore, IF Headland did want to return to WA, and the Lions said "no deal", he would then have to chose either to risk his chances in the draft, or stay with the club.

I would rather that, then send a message to every ex-pat playing for the Lions, that they can come and go whenever they please, and get exactly what they want from the Lions.

You might as well tell them all that they can hold the club to ransom, otherwise.

In the effort to draft top young players from all across the country, you don't want to be in the situation where you draft a player, but then continually face the prospect of "giving in" to what they want merely to suit their wants.

You've got to look after your own club, at some point.

The purpose of refusing to do a trade with a WA team would be, that it would then put the Lions in a more favourable position to retain Headland, over the prospect of going into the draft and going to say either, Carlton or St.Kilda.

I would imagine, that if a deal couldn't be struck with a WA club, Headland would most likely rather stay with the Lions than to move to yet another club again.

Stocka,

Relax you fella

The reason I said you havent seen much of Pavlich is because you wrote "Who does he play for". Perhaps I presumed a bit too much? I was not the one who said Michael was average? I love the Mal. Anyway this arguement will reach its finnaly in about 5 years so Im giving up. As for supporting Freo, I will always be a Fitzroy supporter, I love the Brisbane Lions (Yes I went insane when North robbed us in 99), but Freo gave Fitzroy a very good send off and considering I live down the road I have a soft spot for Freo?

Johnson for All Australian!

Sounds good to me, mate! Just don't get any ideas on pinching our players though . . . ;)

I reckon he might find it pretty hard making the AA side this year. While I'd say that he's in contention for the top 10 in the Lions B&F count (with a number of stand-out games), he has been patchy at times, and is up against some stiff opposition - especially considering that the AA selection seems to favour stacking the side with midfielders, as opposed to "specialist" players.

However, he's certainly been one of, if not the best attacking small defender in the competition over the last two or so years.

For what it's worth, I reckon Johnson may go on to record the longest playing career for an Indigenous player. Hopefully he can pick up a B&F or two along the way, as well as other honours (AA selection, etc.), to mark a great career.

I went to the Brissy/WCE game last week and was in section 73 or 71 or something in the 70's. :D

Anyway, people were handing out pictures of Des to the whole section and people held it up yelling 'DES!' whenever he got the ball. And at the end of the night, there was also a huge banner that people held out. I think it said something like 'STAY WITH US DES!'. Well Des knew about it and clapped to the section at the end of the night. He knows how bad the Brissy fans want him.

He has reached nearly the same cult status as Aker at the 'gabba. There is an amazing buzz whenever he gets the ball, in the same way as when Aker gets the ball.

He would be as popular as Buckley is at the gabba' if he came back next year in a Freo/WCE jumper. :D
