Headset Problems

One of my friends just let me borrow one of his old headsets that works fine at his place.. but like all of the other headsets i've owned, if i plug the headset into the back of the computer, only the microphone works but if i plug it into the front ports, only the headphones. I have absolutely no idea what the problem is??

I've googled it as you do with any of lifes problems and i havnt found anything. Anyone with help would be greatly appreciated

do you actually configure the headset inputs and outputs on your sound card or motherboard.
of course thats in the control panel
if all else fails try a usb headset they pretty much configure themselves
