Hearts to Hearts - A NMFC Dynasty

Starting a new story/dynasty for whoever wants to follow to join me on the ride. Using haydo169's 2016 lists for PC2011. As I don't like the starting point of a career in PC I will be simulating the entire first season and posting the results of that here, and I will take over and do all the off-season goodies - resigning players, drafting, trades etc and then I will begin the dynasty. Welcome aboard, hope to stick this out for a while too, updates will be sporadic but I hope I gain some followers never the less.
2011 - The Forgotten Year
The simmed year, wasn't a good one for North as we missed finals and could only manage to scrap to 12th on the ladder thanks to a 9-13 record for the season. However this does leave me with Pick 6 in the upcoming draft to go with an abundance of cap space so expect a very active off season. Anyways I'll give you a quick wrap of the season that no one cares about, here's all you could possibly want to know and more...

Loving another story on here, and great to see a North story (has been a while since one of those has come along) You'll have a tough battle on your hands as the game doesn't seem to like the Roos much, but I'm looking forward to see how you'll go nonetheless.
Good luck :)

2011 Trade Week (It's the most wonderful time of the yearrrrr)

Trade 1
In: David Armitage
Out: Shaun Atley

latest

Love Ats personally, but to build a premiership side you need to make the big calls. Atley is 82 overall Outside Mid who although has scope for improvement wont reach that elite type of talent we need, whereas Armitage is an 89 overall at 27 years in the prime of his career and will help us win now. Big call but will be one of our best players this year, win-win trade as Atley fits the young profile of the Saints and will be in his prime while they are preparing to challenge whereas Armitage most likely would miss the success but now gets a shot at a flag.

Trade 2
In: Zach Tuohy
Out: Corey Wagner, Pick 40

476063748-zach-tuohy-of-the-blues-looks-dejected-after-gettyimages.jpg

Another win now trade for us, bringing in Zach Tuohy from Carlton as we are lacking in the Small Defender area. Tuohy is another player coming into the prime of his career, while Corey Wagner is hard to let go of he was behind Harvey, Higgins, Thomas, Anderson, Nahas, Garner and Turner for a Small Forward spot in the side. Carlton should be a good fit for the youngster, we also threw in our third round pick, 40th overall which wasn't heartbreaking to part ways with.

Trade 3
In:
Jackson Trengrove
Out: Aaron Mullett, Pick 23

Jackson+Trengove+AFL+Rd+14+Port+v+Western+apiOjzIVy1Zl.jpg

With the addition of Zach Tuohy, Aaron Mullett become superfluous to the club's needs, he is still a quality player but as the Small Defender spots are now being held down, the Tall Defender position is the next weakness North wanted to address. Enter Jackson Trengrove. 25 years of age and 85 overall a perfect partner in crime for Robbie Tarrant to lock down the key defensive posts. Port get a running defender/mid in Mullett to suit their run and gun style of play and Pick 23 which can net them a very handy player.

Trade 4
In:
Pick 6, Pick 74 and Pick 91
Out: Pick 12, Pick 39 and Pick 46

question-1.jpg

After trading away a number of early picks I was in the market to gain some mid range picks back and West Coast was happy to oblige.

2011 National Draft

Pick 12 - Bryan Hawkes - Outside Mid (73 overall/91 potential)
Bryan is a quick young Outside Midfielder, who has been likened to Patrick Dangerfield. He is a 73 overall with a 91 potential and the club decided that with their first pick the mantra would be to pick the best available and Bryan was far and away the best option. With a team packed full of quality midfielders Bryan may have to bide his time in the VFL for a few years until he further develops.

Pick 39 - Brendan Gau - Inside Mid (71/89)
We didn't plan to take another Midfielder with our second pick but Brendan was projected to go in the top 20 of the draft but was a big slider and we thought he was worth pulling the trigger on. Brendan is a tall midfielder who can drift forward, he is a strong clearance player and does his best work in and around packs.

Pick 46 - Jimmy Beckford - Tall Forward (69/83)

Jimmy was a late bolter, who is a bit of a slow burner. He had a slow start to his junior career but finished his career as a junior with bags of goals week in week out to put himself into draft contention. Although he may not make the grade, at Pick 46 Jimmy is well worth the punt.

Pick 57 - Kenneth Rawson - Tall Defender - (70/78)
As the picks get higher the more the draft begins to become a crapshoot, however Kenneth Rawson is a solid defender who you know what you're going to get from. He is more physically developed than many others undrafted at this stage and a lot better prepared to play at the AFL level, but he does have a lower ceiling than the others around him. A safe pick to finish us off.

2011 Pre-Season Draft

Pick 6 - David Myers - Outside Mid - (81/81)

Every club is taking advantage of the runaway Bombers here. Heppell, Hurley and all the guns walked and the rest of the banned players followed so in Myers I can replace Shaun Atley with a similar player while still getting David Armitage. Big win, good to have a midfield that bats deep.

2011 Rookie Draft

Pick 6 - Oliver Sorlfeet - Tall Forward - (68/82)
Pick 23 - Hunter Metcalf - Small Forward - (67/81)
Pick 46 - Brody East - Outside Mid - (71/82)
Pick 57 - Cody Tarrant - Outside Mid - (66/80)

Tall Defenders
Trengrove (84), Tarrant (83), Hansen (82), Thompson (81), Tippett (79), Durdin (76), Nielson (75), Rawson (70)

No superstars in the mix for the Tall Defenders on the list however depth is solid, Trengrove and Tarrant should hold down the key posts and Hansen/Thompson to take the third tall position. Tippett a solid replacement if any injuries arise while Durdin/Nielson are young and ready to step up for when Thompson and Hansen sharply decline like most players on PC tend too.

Small Defenders
Tuohy (83), Wright (83), McDonald (78), McKenzie (72), Hibberd (69),

Probably the weakest link in our squad at the minute. Tuohy and Wright both good players and McDonald should progress into a good player, but if injuries hit McKenzie/Hibberd may be in a bit over their heads. Hoping good defensive efforts from our mids can help out the backline and force some rushed entries to alleviate some of the pressure on them. Team defence will need to be the game.

Inside Midfielders
Cunnington (87), Ziebell (85), Swallow (84), Clarke (74), Mountford (72), Gau (71)

Cunnington, Ziebell and Swallow make an imposing trio for our in and under inside mids, should be able to dominate clearances with this lot on the inside while youngsters Clarke, Mountford and Gau should all develop into solid players in the future while the older boys hold down the midfield spots during this time.

Outside Midfielders
Armitage (89), Higgins (87), Dal Santo (84), Wells (83), MacMillan (82), Myers (81), Gibson (80), Hawkes (74), Fordham* (74), East* (71), C. Tarrant* (66),

Armitage and Higgins are elite outside mids who should be able to capatilise on the clearance work of Cunnington, Ziebell and Swallow while Dal Santo and Wells are both on the decline but still can be valuable contributors to the team with some class and composure. MacMillan and Myers also should be in or around our best side with both providing solid options as a midfield rotation while number 6 draft pick Hawkes could be a smokey for selection but is a bit stuff to be in one of our deepest positions.

Ruckmen
Goldstein (94), Daw* (77)

We have
the premier ruckman of the competition in Goldstein and we are lucky he likes to play as a solo ruck as the only other full time ruck option we have is Majak Daw who remains on the Rookie List. If god forbid, he was to go down Daw could replace him but Brown, McKay and Durdin are also players who are capable of playing as a ruck if necessary.

Tall Forwards
Brown (84) Petrie (82), Black (81), McKay (79), Waite (79), Beckford (70), Sorlfeet* (68),

Another slighty weak position here for us. Brown is obviously the key, big potential and could be our Full Forward for a long time if he continues on his current career trajectory. Petrie and Waite are both nearing the end and thus declining, while Black remains a solid player who is limited and McKay is a youngster who is still raw and learning. Beckford and Sorlfeet remain question marks, will need one to develop quickly to fill a hole when Petrie and Waite hang up the boots. Going to need a big year from Benny Brown.

Small Forwards
Thomas (82), Nahas* (81), Anderson (78), Garner (78), Harvey (76), Turner (76), Metclaf* (67)

Going to be hard to do but I think barring injuries I will have to avoid playing Harvey as he has sharply declined and this will only continue. Despite age not wearying him in real life, this is PC afterall. Thomas is our best small by far in the forward mix, while Nahas is solid yet still on the rookie list as he has a number of limitations as a player. Anderson/Garner/Turner are all youngsters who should be fighting for a spot in the team each week, should put some healthy competition on each other for spots.

From foes to friends, Zach Tuohy will be glad to be playing with Jack Ziebell rather than against him. Tuohy is joined by David Armitage, Jackson Trengrove and David Myers in making their debuts in the blue and white stripes. The stupid NAB Cup in this game has caused injuries to Shaun Higgins and Aaron Black and a suspension to Lindsay Thomas so they all will miss the first few matches of the season.

North Melbourne outlast reigning Premiers
Mar 17th 2012

Hawthorn: 13.13.91
North Melbourne: 15.9.99

In an early season thriller North Melbourne has defeated the benchmark of the competition in Hawthorn by 8 points in front of a 62,322 strong crowd at the MCG. Hawthorn had control of the match for the majority of the first half going into the major break with a 15 point lead.

In the second half it seemed likely that the Hawks, as they usually do would pull away on the back of their experienced leaders. However North Melbourne refused to lay down and clawed their way to a 4 point buffer through a 6 goal third quarter. North managed to bog the game down and make it a real contested battle, not allowing Hawthorn the high uncontested possesion game they love, which contributed strongly to the lead. The last quarter saw plenty of twists and turns but when the final siren sounded the blue and white army in the crowd was elated as their boys had managed to hold on for a 8 point win in an instant classic. Ben Cunnington kicked the sealer with 40 seconds remaining to cap off a fantastic night for his team.

Todd Goldstein was the diffence for the victors, producing a mammoth 21 disposals, 34 hitouts and 12 marks, stamping his authority on the rest of the competition as a force to be reckoned with. Goldstein's midfielders reaped the rewards of his ruck dominance with Cunnington, Armitage, Wells, Jacobs, Swallow and Dal Santo all racking up 26+ touches.

Jarryd Roughead would be ruing his missed chances, having 9 shots on goal but finishing with an inaccurate 4 goals 5 behinds. Roughead threatened to pull Hawthorn over the line but he let North off too many times in the end. Hodge and Duryea also impressed across half back for the Hawks in a tough loss.

Looks like the blues are really itching to get rid of Zach Tuohy with these lists. I picked him up in my story the other day as well.

:p As SKM said, North is a hard one. Good luck!

There always seems to be the same couple of players on the trade block. Armitage is usually also available after the first year.

Thanks mate!

NO CHANGE

Ryan Clarke is one of the youngsters biding his time in the reserves for North Melbourne but his form has been phenomenal and is thus an emergency. After Round 1's impressive win over a strong Hawthorn, North have gone into their clash in Geelong with no changes. Other youngsters Sam Durdin and draftee Bryan Hawkes remain emergencies after good VFL form.

Simmonds Stadium Spanking
Mar 24th 2012

Geelong: 21.8.134
North Melbourne: 14.8.92

North Melbourne's dream start to the season has quickly turned into a nightmare with Geelong bringing them back to earth thanks to a 42 pantsing. The Cats jumped North kicking the first 4 goals of the match and running into quarter time with a 19 point lead. The second quarter produced more of the same, with the Geelong Midfield getting on top and North struggling to contain the big fellas up forward in Hawkins, Stanley and Smith.

A half time bake still couldn't get North Melbourne into gear and with another poor quarter in the books the margin was 31 points heading into the final break. Dangerfield and Duncan ran riot in the last quarter as Geelong extended its lead and posted a wire-to-wire win. The final margin was 42 points and after a comprehensive loss North Melbourne will have some work to do next week.

Patrick Dangerfield did as Dangerfield does on his way to collecting 39 disposals, while understudy Mitch Duncan racked up 36 of his own to go with a goal from outside 50 in the last to put the icing on the cake. Skipper Joel Selwood was also impressive with 27 disposals, 3 goals and 9 clearances while youngster Ed Langdon won the rising star nomination for round 2 on the back of his performance which produced 25 disposals, 4 marks and 7 clearances.

Very little went North Melbourne's way in this one, but under heavy pressure Key Defender Robbie Tarrant was impressive. Tarrant had 19 disposlas and a massive 13 spoils to add to his 3 rebound 50's. Ben Jacobs was again prolific while Ben Brown booted another 4 majors playing a lone hand up forward.

Despite North Melbourne's big Round 2 defeat at the hands of Geelong they have submitted an unchanged lineup heading into their upcoming clash with Essendon. North are hoping to get some continuity and fluency in their game style and team set ups and pump games into exciting youngsters such as Jed Anderson, Taylor Garner and Luke McDonald. Aaron Black is back from injury but with Ben Brown performing well and Drew Petrie and Ben McKay playing their roles he misses out.

North bounce back against depleted Dons
Mar 30th 2012

North Melbourne: 18.7.115
Essendon: 15.8.98

Despite Essendon being on the end of a mass exodus following the fall out from the drugs saga they have been competitive throughout the early going of the season. The Bombers managed to stick with North for 3 quarters and even went into the last with a 2 goal advantage, but like the good teams do when push came to shove North managed to come out on top for a 17 point win.

The North Melbourne midfielders stood up in the final stanza on their way to winning the overall clearance battle 39-28. They piled on 7 goals to 3 in the final quarter to run away victors. Ben Brown kicked 4 of them to go with his 4 in the first three quarters to make it a day out for the curly haired forward.

Ben Jacobs continued his stellar early season form with 33 touches. Jacobs had previously been used as a tagger but he is thriving in a new role being freed up to play as a running midfielder. A pair of former Saints in David Armitage and Nick Dal Santo collected 65 disposals between them, and big man Todd Goldstein was again impressive with 16 diposals and another 34 hitouts.

Essendon's day was dampened significantly with Jackson Merrett going down early in the third quarter clutching his knee. Word has come through that he has torn his ACL and will be forced to miss the entire 2012 season in a massive blow for the Bombers. David Zaharakis was the pick of the losing side with 33 disposals, 7 tackles and a goal.

Despite coming off a win North Melbourne have made two changes at the selection table. Lindsay Thomas returns from suspension and youngster Kayne Turner makes way for the enigmatic small forward. While in exciting news pick 12 from last years draft Bryan Hawkes will make his debut coming in for David Myers who has pulled up poorly from a severe cork late in the match against his former team. Hawkes will be donning former North legend Wayne Carey's famous number 18 freed up by the departure of Shaun Atley.

North account for competitive Carlton
Apr 7th 2012

Carlton: 13.9.87
North Melbourne : 17.10.112

Coming off an unspectacular win against a struggling Essendon, North Melbourne faced another opponent it simply must beat in Carlton if they wish to be around come September. You could tell from the first bounce that North meant business from the first siren as Ziebell, Cunnington and Swallow threw their weight around against a young Carlton midfield to lead to a 13 point buffer at quarter time.

North Melbourne managed to better put their dominance on the scoreboard in the second quarter causing a 37 point lead at the major break on the back of some outstanding clearance work from Todd Goldstein and his midfielders who dominated in tight. Carlton showed some resistance in the second half but ultimately the boys in blue and white were too good running out 25 point winners.

For Carlton not much went well, with their forwards suffering from a lack of entries and the midfield dominated in the clearances and on the spread. However the Blues backline battled courageously all night with youngster Jacob Weitering impressing collecting 19 disposals and 11 spoils. Kade Simpson and Matthew Wright also worked hard throughout the encounter finding 26 and 25 disposals respectively and combining for 9 rebound 50's. Tonights encounter marked the first meeting of Twins Harry and Ben McKay, with Ben getting the points on the night. The McKay parents were shown wearing both Carlton and North Melbourne scarves showing no favouritism to either side.

Another youngster also caught the eyes of the 47,448 members of the crowd, Bryan Hawkes. Hawkes in his debut gathered 24 disposals and linked up on the outside well to become an outlet for the inside bulls of North Melbourne in Swallow (35 disposals, 4 clearances), Armitage (33 disposals, 8 tackles, 6 clearances and Ben Cunnington (25 disposals, 5 clearances, 2 goals) Big man Ben Brown continued his stellar start to the season booting another 3 goals to keep himself in contention for the Coleman Medal. Lindsay Thomas in his first game for the season played a slightly different role to what he is accustomed to, pushing further up the ground as a roaming half forward, he was good with 17 disposals and 5 inside 50's showing no signs of rust.
