Apparently Hart's season may be over. If Goodwin's is also, and assuming we're going to upgrade a rookie for Carey, that's three rookies we can upgrade!

I say:

Smiith
Parker
Hazell

Dabrowski won't make the grade and Andrews isn't likely to play a game this season, but should probably be promoted at the end.

Strange as Carey is retiring because of a long-term injury.

nah i havent heard but im pretty sure that why u retire has nothing to do with it...but of course im happy to be proved wrong! ;)

the smart thing for the AFC to have done was to place Carey on the LTI list, upgrade a rookie and then retire Wayne a few weeks later...sneaky as it is! i wonder if they wld have gotten away with it??:p

i will say tho that the AFC surely wld have looked into whether it cld upgrade a rookie if Carey retires because of an injury???

who knows down there tho

If Carey hadn't got his neck injury, he would be playing (unlike the retired Smart), so I can't see how it is unreasonable to promote a rookie to replace him.

I just spoke to Matty Robran and we certainly can promote a rookie because Wayne retired due to a long term injury. The cut-off for promoting a rookie is round 18 so if we are going to do it we need to by then.

One consideration for the club is the impact on the salary cap from this promotion as the rookie then goes onto a senior wage. Given that we are very tight on the salary cap it is no certainty that we will promote anyone unless we are definitely going to play them.

If we were to promote anyone the two names mentioned were Tim Hazell and Rowan Andrews, with Hazell being the more likely as he is considered able to step straight into the side whereas Andrews is considered to be doing a great job but is further away from selection.

I asked about Matthew Smith and the club believe that he has developed extremely well this year and he may be another that is considered if we do decide to elevate a rookie.

Common sense prevails with us being able to promote a rookie for the injured / retired Carey. I thought with a rookie promotion there shouldn't be a salary cap issue, as I thought LT injury payments were outside the cap???

Would have thought Smith, Parker & Hazel were ahead of Andrews, as he hasn't done enough at the Tigers to warrant selection.

agree 100%...

and without knowing the "actual" rules, im just speculating that i doubt we can add a rookie because Carey has retired, not gone on to the LTI list!

ill see if i can find the rule...without confusing myself:p

Not sure about the LT injury payments but my guess is that they are included in the cap. If not then the salary cap could be manipulated each time there is a LT injury - eg. lose a high $ player to injury, promote a rookie on basic wage, bring forward another highly paid players $'s from the next year to this year which would free up some space next year. I could be completely wrong though.

With regards to Hazell, Matty Robran did say that he is just giving his opinion and what he has heard discussed. He isn't part of the football operations committee though and made the point that they could be looking at someone else.

Surely Parker will get elevated. The guy is def the best fit for our list in the future and we might as well play him now, has played well for Glenelg since crossing from south.

Hazell started well but has tapered off and Smith has been injured.

If we do promote a rookie and it isn't Parker, I'll be extremely ****ed off. Give him the chance - he should have had from the start of this year.

Correct - Collective Bargaining Agreement part 4.7

4.7 Football payments to a Rookie:
(a) while on the Rookie List; and/or
(b) while on the Primary List to replace a long term injured Player,
shall not be included in the Total Player Payments of an AFL Club provided that if the Rookie remains on the Primary List when the long term injured Player is reinstated to the Primary List, Football Payments received by the Rookie in respect of the period after the long term injured Player is reinstated (“the date of
reinstatement”) will be included in the Total Player Payments.

Cheers marvin, thought that was the case. Well there is then no excuse for us not trying out up to 3 rookies then.
