Hi everyone,

Can someone tell me how I would go about finding out exactly what video card I have installed on my system?

Thanks in advance,

Luke

in windows xp, should be pretty much the same in all windows operating system, and am presuming you have drivers installed:

right click on the desktop and choose properties, settings, advanced, adapter see adapter type

i am actually going to presume you don't have the drivers installed, the best way is to open your computer case and take out the card and look for it, i believe the very first screen that comes up when booting your computer says it as well, you will need to use the pause break key to pause it for ease of use

There are a couple of ways of doing it. If the card is installed and working, go to control panel->display->settings->Advanced->Adapter and it is whatever it says in "adapter type".

If it isn't installed, open up the box and look at the serial number on the card, or if it is on-board video, the serial on the motherboard and google it.

Beat me to it!

Actually what you suggested doesn't work for. I've get my system set to hide all icons, but it also prvents right-clicking on the desktop.

well the guy never specified his os or his settings ;)

oh and i believe by default windows doesn't do that, i think its a good bet the poster wouldn't know how to hide/disable icons/right click ... actually i don't know how to do it lol

Erm or go to Start>Run> type dxdiag and hit enter. Wait for it to load up then go to the "Display" tab it'll show you all you need to know about your card.

Thanks for all your suggestions, I'll try it out tonight..

I'm just wanting to know whether my video card is good enough to be able to play NBA Live 2005.

Cheers,

Luke

With video cards also... Do you need a good one to play The Sims 2?

I've got new good bits for my computer.. except for a video card, I've only got onboard.

Would buying a card make it so that I could play the game?

yeah probably but do you have an AGP slot ?? you will need one..

G'day everyone. I posted the question a while ago about finding out what Video card I had installed, and with your help I've found it.

I've discovered that this is the Video Card I'm using:

NVidia Riva TNT2 Model 64 (32 MB Memory Size)

I didn't have too many problems with NBA Live 2004, so long as I didn't have the graphics settings on too high.

So how will I go for Live 2005 do you think? Is it a good Video card or a bit old now? Any suggestions about upgrades?

And in the following screen, what does "update driver" mean?

Control Panel>Display>Settings>Advanced>Adapter>Properties>Driver--

Update Driver

Any information would be appreciated!

Cheers,

Luke

It's old now - worth looking at replacements.
Replacement really depends on how much cash you've got to spend.

Drivers are the software that 'drives' your hardware. To update yours, go to www.nvidia.com and click Download Drivers. Find the appropriate one for your O/S, download it and run it. It'll help.

Good question...

I wouldn't be prepared to part with more than a couple of hundred at this stage, but looking around on eBay there are some decent video cards available at pretty good prices!

The problem really is me not knowing what video cards are available on the market, and what they cost.

Based on my initial research online, the best video card at the most reasonable price appears to be the Radeon 9600XT.

Retails for just over $200... unless anyone knows where I can pick up a bargain! ;)

Thoughts?

Okay that was my original post. I have a pretty good system, by no means a world beater - the processor would be about a 1 Mhz processor speed, 512 Meg Ram, about 40 Gig available Hd space and generally it's "pretty good" after we had it upgraded within the last 6-12 months.

Here are some video cards I'm considering:

Ti4200
or
RADEON 9600 128M

Thoughts?

Okay I've got my computer specifics here - this should help in identifying a suitable video card for my gaming...

Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1500+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1312MHz
Memory: 512MB RAM

Does that help?

You'd prefer a faster CPU, if you look at a lot of newer games the minimum requirements just keep going up. You'd struggle to play Doom 3 for instance, at least at any reasonable graphics quality. My brother, for instance, has a similar system (with a GeForce4 Ti 4200, incidentally), and he can play it, but only with the lowest possible settings.

I've got a P4 2.4 and a GeForce4 Ti 4800SE (only a bit better than the 4200) and it goes fine... for now. Can't play Doom 3 with Ultra High graphics but. I got it for $270, but that was at Christmas last year, so heaps cheaper now.

With your system it's probably not worth getting anything much more expensive than the Ti 4200 -- but having said that you'd be pretty happy with what it could do IMO. It's a pretty good card for its price, and it'll crap all over what you've got in there at the moment.

I had a bit of a look around for the minimum requirements for NBA Live 2005, but there didn't seem to be much out there. You should be right though if you get that card I would have thought.

The sims does require a pretty good card. Spend around $300 and you shouldn't have a problem. RAM is important too.. you will need at least 256MB, preferably a GB.

One bit of general advice....a gaming rig is really only as good as its weakest link. You can have a beast of a CPU, but if your video card is a dog then dog performance is all you will get out of graphics-heavy games. Equally, your new hotness video card isn't going to aid an aging CPU in working through heavy calculations.
