Hey all!

We have a Netgear DG814 modem/router for our ADSL and for some reason it has thoroughly shat itself to the point where we have a sort of network but absolutely no internet at all.
There are 4 comps hooked up to the network - me, my dad and my housemate's desktops, and then either my housemate's or my laptop. Problem is that mine and my dad's desktops can see each other on the network, my housemate's desktop and the laptop can see each other, and I can set up internet connection sharing with our 56kmodem between my housemate's and my desktops (can't do it on my dad's cos he's on w2k and the rest of us are on XP), and we can't get the laptop on board!
We've tried calling our ISP and they have no idea - never come across the problem before, and we've tried calling netgear but they only operate 9-5 on weekdays (when no one is at home at our house!)

We're going a tad batty - if anyone has any ideas on possible solutions or any places to head for advice, please post here!

Firstly forget about internet onnection sharing, its just a pain don't use it for sharing your adsl if you are using a router,
you have basically listed 2 issues firstly the networking and then the internet both are probably related to the networking setup;
1. Check your IP addresses, make sure they are all on the same range i.e 192.168.0.2, 192.168.0.3 etc and same workgroup if you want to see each others systems.
2. Once you can all see each other check the ip address of your router, i havent used that particular one but I assume you can configure it somehow.. see your instructions and make sure it is on the same ip address range as your pc's.
3. Set your gateway on your pc's to the ip address of the router.
4. set your dns servers on your pc's to the dns servers given to you by your isp.

Let me know if any of this helps or if you need more info :)

Actually I would suggest ensuring all your machines are set to use DHCP to get their IP addresses. Just setting the machines to a 192.168.0.x network may not work as some types of routers by default are not on this network (For those who don't know what DHCP is, it is a network service running on a computer or router that provides network information to other computers on the network so they can correctly talk to each other on the local LAN).

** IMPORTANT - TURN OFF INTERNET CONNECTION SHARING ON THE MACHINE DOING THAT BEFORE YOU DO THE BELOW OR YOU COULD GET SOME STRANGE RESULTS **

- Right click on "My Network Places"
- Click on Properties
- In the box that appears, right click on "Local Area Connection"
- Click on Properties. Another box will appear.
- Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button
- Ensure that Obtain an IP Address automatically and Obtain DNS settings automaticaly are selected
- OK this box and close all the windows you have opened.

Open a Command Prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd) and type ipconfig /renew to see if your router is configured to provide network addresses. If it is then it should come back with something like:

C:\WINNT>ipconfig /renew

Windows 2000 IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.100
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.0.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.138

C:\WINNT>

If it comes back with an error message then your router is not supplying network addresses (bad luck).

Certainly having inconsistent network addresses on the network would explain why some machines can talk to each other and some can't. If you don't understand network addressing, then its best to always leave the computers set to "Obtain an IP Address automatically" as even if there are no machines providing the addresses all the machines will pick an address starting with 169.254.... (with all the other settings common) and thus will be able to talk to each other.

[Edit: the 169.254 automated addressing only happens under Windows 2000/XP]
