Hey guys, i'm looking to buy an in home sound system for just general music listening. I'm not looking for anything super special but good enough to listen to alone or when i have mates around for gatherings, good bass would be very ideal. I don't want any radio or cds features just an ipod plug in as thats all i really use to play music. My price range is $300-400 but i have to buy from jb hi-fi because i've got $215 worth of vouchers there to spend.

Any help on what to get and what's required to set up speakers with an ipod would be greatly appreciated as i'm pretty clueless about audio systems...cheers.

You've got a few options mate, not sure how many of them are at JBs though (can you sell the vouchers to a friend?).

Check out the B&W Zeppelin Mini, the Geneva IPod Dock M, or Active Speakers (they have a built in Amp); which would probably be your best option if it's not going to be moved around at all.

Stay away from Bose.

These are active speakers;

I was looking for a system in that price range.

I did a stack of research and I ended up with a Yamaha CRX 040

Ticks every box and you can get it for around $400 @ JB with some haggling.

Seriously, I cannot recommend it enough.

You can get bigger component setups like this Sherwood setup

Louder with less features and a noticeably cheaper sound. Will do the trick though.

I spent around $350 on my 4.0 surround sound system for my room buying speakers and a receiver on eBay and the trading post and it will kill any iPod dock system in every aspect. iPod docks are just a waste of money.

What do you mean by kill?

Really loud, big sub sound?

I guarantee you that the Yamaha system, while not screeching loud, will sound noticeably better than cheap speakers and a no name amp.

Thanks for the help guys...

I'm a bit reluctant on getting an iPod dock cos i'm pretty keen on a large bass sound and i sort of stereotype iPod docks as not being able to go very big on bass.

I'm wondering if i can get a dock for its mobility and then connect a subwoofer to it when i'm listening at home...is that something you can do with a dock or not, i'm really not knowledgeable on this stuff

No, in terms of the depth and clarity of sound.

The 2x15W speakers on the Yamaha won't do you much good - they lack depth. Yes, I have listened to them.

IPod docks definitely serve a purpose, and that's a good one, but I'd go separates, any day of the week.

OPs budget might struggle to stretch that far though; can you save up for a bit longer, or maybe get a 2.0 system now, and get the Sub down the track?

Thanks for the help fellas...

Went into JB today and bought the 'logitech z623 speaker system' for $220. Not sure if its a good deal but I'm loving the bass atm and considering it only cost me $5 out of my own pocket I'm not complaining :D

Looking forward to the next couple of gatherings with the boys now!
