I need help. My knowledge of this box of wires infromt of me extends to turning it on and logging onto the Net. Then selecting Big Footy from Favourites. Then reading with great interest all the views on Footy and whatever else we talk about here.

But I have a big prob.

1) When I turn the computer on it automatically dials up the net. It didnt used to do this.

2) Worse, the Home page it opens up to is a pr0n one. Now I can change this back through the Control Panel. But it eventually changes back to this pr0n site and all these other annoying pop ups.

Please can anyone give me some advice here please.

Thanks

Couple of things you should do:

1) Download Ad-aware, this can be found at CNET.com, after you run it, it'll get rid of all the pop up crap

2) For the dial up problem, go into the IE, choose Tools -> Internet Explorer -> Connections... then click the option that says "Never dial a connection"

Hope that helps :)

You might also want to check that the dial-up connection you are using is the correct one and not a premium rate number, which unfortunately happens with these problems. Just make sure the number you dial is the correct one. If you are still having probs after doing what iceman suggested, there may be something in your startup directory or registry. Too long to explain now, but post again if still a problem.

YES! Definitely check what number you are dialing to.
I work for one of the major telephone companies here in Aus and the major dispute that always arises with customers and a telephone company is extremely high charges to 190 numbers. These are normally internet dial ups...many people's phone bills can end up in the thousands......
It may also be wise to check with your telephone comapny if there has been an extraordinary high amount of these charges recently.

Another good thing you can do is check your start up files.
Go to Start > Run > then type msconfig hit enter and go to the startup tab. You can usually spot the things that don't belong there, just uncheck them. They'll still be somewhere on your computer so it's a good idea to track them down and delete them but at least they won't be running.

Thanks. I emailed Optus. They suggested go into Control Panel and click on Add/remove Programs. Look for something that I didnt do and delete the sod. Mission accomplished.

Thanks again.

****e!!!
Same thing happened to me this very morning.
It looks like someone was surfing the pr0n sites last night after I went to bed.

It put shortcuts on my desktop.
It put sites in my favourites folder
It also done what one eye said...changed my home page to some freeporn.com site

Just took me a half an hour to get rid of I could find ant reference to the bloody things.
Even some of my cookies wont delete.

Basic, I tried what you said but that didnt work.

That'll only work if whatever program is starting itself when you start up your computer or log in to an account. Some progams like this are set up to start only when you open internet explorer or other programs like that. Some others won't try and dial a connection just use the one you have to send information. Checking for them isn't as easy though you can run netstat while you have nothing running to see if there is any open connections.
