Hey guys.

Where is he at in his recovery?

What do you expect of him in 2009?

Back to Full Foward? I remember him doing very well there..

Got very close to returning on several occasions last year, named as an emergency in some game/s. But consistant niggeling injurys cost him this year.

Seems the rest of his body was still recovering from his knee. But his knee is fine.

If he's lost his agility I wouldn't expect much, maybe a delisting at the end of next year, but if he's retained it, he could become a quality forward.

The few times I saw him in the SANFL he looked quite nimble and didn't appear to be hampered by his knee.

A lot will depend on his pre season, if he can get through that without injury and then string some NAB cup games together hopefully he will get on the road back. I worry if he spends the pre season injured again.

If he does come back I can't see him playing anywhere other than FF I wouldn't have him running around anymore than 40 meters out from goal.

And if he does come back I wont watch his first game at Telstra Dome, have some big concerns with him playing on that ground.

Music to my ears.

I loved seeing rowdy's long thin har zip one way as he turned his opponant inside out.

He also surprised me with his strength many times so let's hope he's OK

Here's one video of his first game back after injuring his knee. He looked pretty good here, I know its only Reserves SANFL, but hopefully with a full pre-season he should be right to go:

And one from earlier this year in January:

I'd expect the club to pump him up over summer in the news saying that he has never looked fitter and moved better but his body to unfortunatly let him down a fair bit and for him to be delisted or retire at the end of 2009.

I watched him 3 or 4 times during the year and he looked a shadow of himself. Such a huge shame and I hope he can prove me wrong.

I didn't get to see him play at all last year but a few people I have spoken to that watched him said the same thing. Also apparently one of his SANFL opponents said he has lost his agility and really didn't present much of a danger.

Like you I hope that Rowdy comes back better than ever, but I really don't see it happening. As harsh as it is, I think the club was wrong to retain him for another year. I really, really want to be proved wrong on this score.

The club retained Rowdy because we have such sh!te forward options.

Gill has limited upside and the club knows this. Gill will never be part of a premiership at AFC. He may not even be on our list next year.

Burton has serious long term injuries and only has a few years left.

Tippett, Sellar and Walker are the future of the forward line but all are kids and there are no guarantees all or any of them will make it as established forwards at AFL level.

Rowdy was our best forward and has proven himself at AFL level. Is he capable of re-delivering now? Who knows but it is worth taking a punt on him for another year rather than persisting with Gill who everyone knows will never take us to September glory. Hentschel is effectively taking the spot of a tall 18 year old, low-draft pick who has a low shot of making it at senior level at all - Matt Smith / Alan Obst / Fat guy on rookie list who played at West Adelaide a few years back.

Rowdy circa 2006 proved himself at AFL level. The new one hasn't. He may be taking the spot of a tall 18 year old low draft pick who has a low shot of making it at senior level, but Rowdy himself is not a tall 25 (26 before next season) year old who has a low shot at making it at senior level again.

I love this guy, I desperately want the best for him, but I love the club more and I think we have made a mistake by hanging onto him for another year, especially given we will be retaining Burton as well.

Side note - Alan Obst actually played a few games for North Melbourne this year from teh rookie list... I only found this out the other day. Does anyone know if he is likely to be retained by them?

re Obst, I was aware of this, but 2 or 3 games at North Melbourne hardly makes you a champion.

I presume the club has enough medical data on hand to know that retaining Rowdy for another year wasn't a pointless exercise. In which case, give Rowdy another year. Next year isn't a premiership year for us anyway. If your concern is having a spot available for 1 in 5 chance of making it 18 year old then we can easily create that space with Bass, Biglands, K-Mac, Jericho and any number of Massie (the improvement has to come from somewhere), Gallman, Campbell, Gill (see Massie comment), Shirley (see Massie comment) Armstrong (harsh).
