Hewitt court blue: Open secret weapon misfires

The Kenthurst home of tennis star Lleyton Hewitt.

December 2, 2007

C'MON! Even when the ball is in his court — in his own backyard — it seems Lleyton Hewitt just can't hit a winner these days.
Desperate to make next month's Australian Open title his — after years of whingeing about how the old "slow" surface at Rod Laver Arena has cheated him — Hewitt decided to have a replica of the newly relaid court, complete with the latest "fast" Plexicushion surface, built at his $3 million Sydney hideaway.
But the tennis gods — presumably named Roger and Rafael — had other ideas.
Or perhaps Hewitt's father, Glynn, who is understood to have been overseeing construction of the new courts, didn't grasp his son's very specific instructions with the same level of intensity we've come to expect from a Hewitt.
The upshot is that despite Hewitt and his wife, Bec, receiving council approval to build two tennis courts on their property, a major bungle within the Hewitt camp has resulted in neither court being constructed with the blue Plexicushion surface.
Hewitt is furious.
"Lleyton's court is as slow as a wet week," a source told The Sunday Age. "He's immensely, immensely disappointed. It's not what he expected and not what he wanted."
The mix-up has scuppered Hewitt's plan to hole up with Bec, baby Mia, and coach Tony Roche at his Kenthurst property, north-west of Sydney, over the coming weeks to fine-tune his Australian Open preparation.
Instead, he will be forced to practise mainly at Sydney's Homebush Bay, where the courts have the quicker surface.
Hewitt's long-running battle with Tennis Australia over the slow Rebound Ace surface at the Australian Open came to a head almost two years ago when the former world No.1 screamed "fix the courts" during a disappointing second-round defeat against Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela.
Frustrated at failing to nab the elusive title — despite conquering Wimbledon and the US Open — Hewitt badgered former Open director Paul McNamee about the Melbourne Park courts being too slow and said Australia's best players, who mostly prefer a quicker surface, should get what they wanted.
Earlier this year, he got his wish: the Rebound Ace surfaces were ripped up and replaced with the faster Plexicushion surface in readiness for next year's championship.
Unfortunately, Hewitt's cunning plan to have his own replica court at home on which to sharpen his winning edge has fallen wide of the line.
"I haven't seen the court at Lleyton's home, but my understanding is that it was not built by the same company we used for our courts in Melbourne," Australian Open director Craig Tiley said. "The WM Loud company are the only suppliers of this court in Australia."
Hewitt's manager, David Drsydale, confirmed the bungle.
Hewitt's appearance in the final in 2005 was the only time he has advanced past the fourth round in his home Grand Slam.
Now I'm not the biggest Hewitt fan, but as far as I can tell he has every right to be angry. To ask for something and get the complete opposite is a disgrace. For a proffesional athlete, especially these days against the likes of Federer and Nadal, you need every little edge you can get.

I think it's pretty ordinary that this article is written in a negative way against Hewitt.

LOL. I don't hate him, but you're a goose if you reckon he'll win a 3rd Slam.

In fact, I'd say he'll never again make a semi-final in any Slam event.

Il put it on the line right here and now that he will make another semi of a major, given a bit of luck and fitness.

Hopefully he plays a lot of night matches. In 2005 he played 5 out of 7 at night with only Blake in rnd 2 and Nadal in rnd 4 during the day.

I think with the right draw and a bit of luck he'll make a semi final. But I doubt he'll ever beat Federer or Nadal in the future.

Lleyton is past his best.

He should at some stage make another Semi at a Slam, but he will never win another one, unless some wierd virus wipes out the top 10 or so players...

LLEYTON Hewitt's new coach Tony Roche believes that the former world No. 1 can win the 2008 Australian Open, with the Australian having set himself the lofty goal of winning his third grand slam title in January.

Roche, who began coaching Hewitt last July, a matter of months after parting company with Roger Federer, said that Hewitt was ready for a career renaissance and that he was "definitely" capable of returning to the game's upper echelon and challenging Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Roche revealed that Hewitt would make a slight change to his game style — adding more variation and aggression — in a recognition that Federer and Nadal were playing a different game to the one that Hewitt "dominated" some years ago.

Roche yesterday predicted that 2008 could be a major upswing for Hewitt, who "had a new lease of life" and, having settled into family life, was looking forward to a more productive next phase of his career.

Asked what Hewitt's goal was for next month's Australian Open, Roche bluntly replied: "To win it."

LOL :D! Hewitt has no hope!

I hope I can bump this thread later and laugh at you but I dont think he will either.

A lot will depend on the draw but im predicting a 4th rnd effort

I wouldnt be surprised to see Hewitt self implode and go out even earlier. The one I really want to see do well is Stosur- she just has to make her mark in 2008, she has the game to challenge, just not the belief.

I think even more important is what our other guys do in the draw. For most the Oz Open is the best chance for them at any major. Players like Guccione, Luczak among others need to step up and win a few rounds like what happened in 2006 I think, when both Nathan Healey (lost to Davydenko) and Luczak (lost to Haas) made the 3rd round, after Hewitt was knocked out in the 2nd round by Juan Ignacio Chela.

Your right with Stosur. Im pretty sure that Casey Dellacqua has direct entry to the event and i hope Jessica Moore qualifies/gets a wildcard to the event (she went to the same high school as me:D)

As much as I liek Hewitt I think his days of winning a slam are past. He might have a QF or SF in him given a good draw. Unfortunatly players like Guccione, Healy and Luczak might get few a few rounds but really are not up to challening the best.

I would not cheer for Lleyton in anything especially in Davis Cup as I am not interested in Davis Cup. I dont consider him a great as he was in 2001 and 2002. If he is great as you say he is, he should have won 6-7 grand slams by now.

Great: Roger Federer, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg and Monica Seles. This to me ithese players are great as these players continually stepped on the Grand Slam level and I am afrai Lleyton has not done that.

I guess it all comes down to denitions of words, I don't think anyone is saying that they would put him in with those legends of the game, to win two Grand Slam tournamets now a days does put him up with the best Australians given how the game has developed around the world.

Just re reading your pos as well he has made 4 grand slam finals, and won two he may not have continually stepped up with the top handfull to have ever played the game in the modern era but he did play some good grans slam tennis.
