There is debate on one of the Melbourne sites about the value of David Hille both as a player and captain and I would be interested in the thoughts of the Bombers supporters.

Is he a good player in you opinion and is he captain material in your opinion, just looking for an honest appraisal.

He's got a lot to learn, about both.

He's been thrown in the deep end and it isn't a great spot for a 24 year old who is yet to reach his peak as a player, let alone a leader.

He does have great leadership qualities, but even when he was given the job it was known he wasn't ready. It was purely a development case and it was always seen that Hird would be around to take the pressure off Hille.

As a player, he's one of our most important. Probably behind Fletcher and Hird. He's taken a back seat the past few weeks because we've been looking to give Laycock as many minutes as possible. I thought he was much better this week with the added responsibility of more minutes in the middle. White probably shaded him, 19 Disposals, 22 HO's, Hille 13 Disposals, 17 HO's and a goal but it was a better game than his past couple.

I think he'll finish the season off strongly and in 4 years time, yes I do think he'll be captain material. Right now, he isn't.

all valid points, expecially about hird still being there. Just showed on the weekend why he is a legend of our club. Obviously injured on the weekend still managed to get 23 touches while other fit senior players have managed to excuse poor form on the basis of a bad pre season.

Appreciate that, but what about a comment on Hille as a player and Captain?

Anybody?

I think if you read that, his very first statement, you can gather he was agreeing with the points I made in the post above.

Understand that but was hoping for some diverse comment from a number of Supporters, there must be differing views and I would like a few of them.

But if no one is interested then I will go back to my home base.

Thanks for your view.

Cheers longy:thumbsu:

Sorry for going onto Hird as the topic but we havent got much else to praise at the bombers these days.

Anyway onto hille, really solid player for us even though he does make some simple errors at times, but these have reduced every year. In my opinion is able to actually able to impact a game when in good form, is able to go into defence help out and take a mark under pressure and also go forward and kick a goal when we need one. His work in the middle has greatly improved also. Like longy said he is a very important player to our side.

As a captain given the choices available I was happy for hIlle to be chosen as they must look to the future of the club. Lucas and Fletcher would have been appropriate choices but not really necessary as it is a short term role and they are experienced leaders on the field anyway. I think he was the best option of the younger brigade as he has stood up more in games when needed compared to others in our club, an attribute you will find in most AFL captains.

i always feel that a captain of a team has to posses a few things, A) been around the club for a while 5 or so years and B) someone who is more in their late 20's as guys mature later and its not a role you just throw to your best youngster ( i think that has been st kildas pitfall) it has to been given to a player that has experienced the ups and downs that the club has been through.. so when that player captains and they loose one day, he will no what to do when the younger ones have their heads down.. i think hille has been around the club from a while.. but atm i think maybe essendon should opt for dual captaincy from the older guys maybe lucas and fletcher.. but mjor props for hille :thumbsu:

certainly a lot of good points I hadn't thought of. To me Hille has improved in his confidence and accountability this year. He still has a lot of maturing to do in the ruck and up forward, but the careless errors and disposals are drying up. I don't think he should ever be a set FF - better actually at HFF for mine

valid points moose. Although i would prefer if the vast majority of the game he was left in the ruck due to his mobile and agile attribututes.
