...is a wonderful thing.

Darren Jolly
Nick Gill
Steven Armstrong
Scott Thompson
Stephen Powell
Troy Simmonds
Matthew Bishop
Nathan Bassett
Travis Johnstone
Shane Woewodin
Jeff Farmer

A few handy players that could certainly help us right now, and some recently retired ones as well.

I wouldn't want any of those players now. Thompson left and we got Moloney who I still believe can become a very good player. Nick Gill would be nice and lively up forward but he can't kick at all. The rest of that list are ruckman (a position were going pretty well in) or retired/old guys. Armstrong isn't much good as well.

Going pretty well with our ruckmen? I'd take Simmonds and Jolly over any of the four we currently have.

Thompson is a gun, and even though I like Moloney, he is miles ahead of him as a player. Would probably be our captain and best and fairest by now.

Wouldn't mind Bassett either. A reliable defender. Instead, we've got Carroll and Wheatley.

and lose the players we got through the draft picks or trades for these players? no thanks... the ones we got nothing for were no good, and still wouldn't get much of a run in our team... the only ones I regret are Thompson and Farmer, we didn't receive a fair deal in those trades, but we really didn't have much choice...

Look, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we shouldn't have done any of those trades, but just looking back at the players we let go, there are some that we could really use right now.

Jolly wanted out.
Gill played a handful of good games nothing special.
Armstrong is average.
Thompson wanted out.
Powell no longer playing.
Simmonds is regretful.
Bishop no longer playing.
Johnstone wouldnt have done anything.
Woewodin no longer playing.
Farmer wanted out.

Out of your list, the only one we had a chance of keeping, and would have made a difference, and that is still playing would be Simmonds. And we should never have got rid of him.

Rookie listed end of 1996, alongside McDonald and Robertson. Terrific effort by whoever was the recruiting manager back then.

Simmonds and Jolly are better but our rucks are going ok, they aren't why we are losing. The Jolly trade was good, the Simmonds one not so good but Jolly stepped up and we had a good ruck department. I think we got Ellis for him and at the time we needed a tall backman and Ellis was ok when not injured. The trade had very good intentions which is the main thing, because not even the best recruiters can predict the future but they can tell if Tarrant will be shit if you know what I mean. We knew we gave up a good young ruckman but we needed the key position player to get close to a flag.

Thompson left so we can't argue that one.

Basset would have been good but wont help us now as he's nearing the end of his career. Probably was rightly let go off at the time as he took quite a few years.

Stupid thread.

Darren Jolly - Yeh sure I'd take him now, but he's no star and wanted to leave for more gametime.
Nick Gill - Dud.
Steven Armstrong - I loved his attitude but dud.
Scott Thompson - Gun, but he was always going to leave.
Stephen Powell - Retired.
Troy Simmonds - Wouldn't have made a huge difference to be honest.
Matthew Bishop - Retired.
Nathan Bassett - Very good 3rd tall but again would not have made a huge difference.
Travis Johnstone - We've been without him for four games. FFS.
Shane Woewodin - What did he do after he left us?
Jeff Farmer - Wanted to leave and never reproduced his 1998 and 2000 form at Freo.

So in short, it's not like we did a Freo and passed up McLeod and Lloyd.

I think the one that really hurts is S.Thompson but he wanted to go home so we couldnt do anything about it.

Darren Jolly - what some people forget is Daniher picked jamar over jolly in the 04 elim. final, after that jolly wanted to be traded and melbourne obliged. In hindsight it was the wrong move as he has improved greatly and jamar has gone backwards at the same rate jolly has gone forwards.
Nick Gill - still not much of a player, he has worked tremendously hard to
Steven Armstrong - still a fringe player.
Scott Thompson - a big loss, but nothing we could do about it. He would be our A grade player we desperately need.
Stephen Powell - asked for to much money and retired a year or two after he lefted.
Troy Simmonds - not a bad loss is a bit overrated IMO.
Matthew Bishop - didnt kick on, would of retired by now anyway.
Nathan Bassett - fractured his sternum and never recovered, melbourne let him go and he has kicked on for the crows.
Travis Johnstone - there were positives and negatives to trading him. We lost class and skill on field but gained more discpline off field.
Shane Woewodin - we gained daniel bell, woey served us well.
Jeff Farmer - wanted to return home.

A few handy players that could certainly help us right now, and some recently retired ones as well.[/quote]
