Surgery sidelines Bomber skipper

Essendon captain James Hird will undergo surgery today to repair a fractured finger in his right hand and will miss this Friday night’s match against Collingwood. Hird damaged the little finger in the first five minutes of last Saturday’s match with Richmond, severely hampering his ability to tackle and handle the ball.

Hird however played on with the injury and Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy made reference to his captain’s courage and discipline in the post-match press conference.

"He played on with it and he was terrific," Sheedy said. If you have a broken hand, find a way to open up the forward line or if you are getting tagged by Chaffey go and sit on another player. He played to a plan and with real discipline despite being injured and we appreciate that – that’s why he is a champion."

Hird will have a plate and some screws inserted into the fracture. He will definitely miss the match against Collingwood and would face a fitness test before a decision is made on his availability for the following week against Brisbane.

Bad news, especially considering the way Hirdy usually takes Collingwood apart. Not surprising though he was about due for another injury
