Thanks to the 1/2 priced AFL dvd/vid sale going on at the moment (thanks for the headsup BBlitz, I've already ordered some through you guys!), I was just wondering about the Name a game series....

I was thinking of buying a few older games, but can't remember the round/year # for some of them.

A few off the top of my head include:

Centenary game Vs Cats 96, Round 6?
Neale Daniher destroying the filth in 81?
The final against the poies where we absolutely SMASHED them (83?)
Ablett Vs Fish

Any other good ones I should investigate?

(I've already got all of the finals packs, GF's Histories, Compilations etc etc etc!)

Some great games that pop into my mind are:

Lloyd vs. Carey
Greatest comeback against North
ANZAC draw
'93 carlton draw (just for kernahans final kick)

I'm sure there are plenty more (especially from '93) great games to watch.

Centenary Game was Round 7 1996
Neale Daniher beating the Blues was Round 20 1981
The final against the Pies was the Preliminary Final of 1984
Ablett Vs Fish was Round 6 1993

:D

The 47 point last qtr comeback against Melbourne in 92 would be a good one. Round 6 in case you're wondering.

Ahh yes, that was the game that Wanga went berserk in the final qtr wasn't it?

Good choice.

I remember Gary O`Donnells acceptance speech after we won this prestigious trophy, if his aim was to put everyone to sleep he succeeded, absolute rubbish he sprouted.

I've got a pic of it somewhere.

I have the video, i am on it, you can get it through the club, not afl videos, it has the scoreboard camera with k-rock commentating. Ted Whitten is a classic, both on the commentary and interviewing the players later on when the video was put together. It is just the last quarter. It is worth getting. Yours truly features right at the end going BAAALLLIISSSTTICCC. No wonder i needed a massage later.
Wanganeen didn`t go off in the last quarter, he kicked the winner though, just on 55 metres. Salmon went beserk as did Kickett. Essendon supporters put the knives down as The Fish won yet another game for us off his own boot. (Yes i have a very long memory, especially when it comes to P.Salmon)
We , suprisingly, had started at The Royal, two up out the back, probably dropped 1 hundj to a very deserving Digger, he bought me a glass of beer, not a pot, then had the cheek to say it was my go, so i bought him the spirit of his choice.
Yes it was a full day.

Is that the one where kickett takes a diving mark on the goal line and hits the post? I think i remember that game.

Nah I'll just watch the other 29 matches Essendon played in that season and won.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway;)

People think we are so upset about losing to the Dogs in 2000 - if the game we lost had of been a GF, then we would have made a big deal - its only the media and the Bulldogs who keep going on about that game.

Games like the 99 prelim final, the 96 Qual & prelim finals sit in my memory more than that particular game. Even the Round 6 loss to the Dockers last year holds more of a ill feeling than that game.

I think losing to the Dogs in 2000 was probably the best thing that could have happened to that side.

I felt Essendon was going to lose a game eventually. I'm just glad it happened then and not later. '99 was too painful an experience to go through again. I think the pressure of trying to go through the whole thing without a blemish would have taken the focus off of the real goal, which was a flag.

That game may mean a lot to Dog supporters, but it is little more than an afterthought to us.

I have nothing against Footscray - IMO the competition would suffer without them - but I think it shows the difference in attitude between the clubs. In the club's entire existence they have one flag to show for it, and a half-century old one at that.

Carrying on about a gutsy upset victory is great, but I'd like to see my club have more to add to its legacy than just that.

That was the first game I ever went to. I'll never forget it, for all the right reasons.:D :D :D

I'd love to get the Lloyd v Wayne-Care shootout from 1999 and the best ever comeback in 2001. 1993 prelim final wouldn't be bad either.:D :D

Stealth, it was not the best thing that could have happened at all. The best thing that could have happened was winning.

Do you think that if we entered the GF against Melbourne having won in round 21, that we would magically lose the game, because we "had to lose"? Of course not.

There has never been a rule that says you have to lose a game, and I don't know where that myth was born. If anything losing a game gives you an excuse for losing the Grand Final. If you are undefeated, you know you must win the Grand Final, and there is no "cop-out" excuse.

Whilst there are always some positives you can take out of a loss, there are always far more you can take out of a win.

I'm sorry, but I can't see how winning the game against the Bulldogs in round 21, would have reversed finals victories of 125, 45 and 60 points.

Two " good" losses to get would be the eagles game where we had 16 fit men and the doggies game in 2000, the standing ovations that the boys got after both losses will live with me for ever.
I am still trying to obtain the `83 elim, if any of you good people could help me out , windyhill would be eternally grateful.

Screw matches. Get "Bombers: A history of the Essendon Football Club" on DVD. I watched it again last night, it's pretty good. Infact, one of the funniest Sheedy quotes on it:

"I mean I give him abit of a hard time, I mean it's great to see him get a bit of a biff and a cut here and there because you can't run around the football ground looking like Robert Redford all your life" - On James Hird.

Johnny, do you want the Elim final on VHS or DVD?

I'll see what I can do. I'm still after a video store that has any premierships on DVD in the Essendon area. If anyone knows of any let me know!

Sheedy loves to stick the knife into Hirdy at times doesn't he.
:D
