HMAS Sydney found

Like a few around Australia, the finding of the HMAS Sydney yesterday certainly brought some joy to my family. The 66 year mystery of what happened to her in Australia's worst maritime disaster finally appears near to a close.

For many it will finally bring closure to an agony of not knowing exactly what happened to their dads/uncles/husbands. While i didn't lose a loved one on the Sydney, she holds a spot in my family. My grandfather was in her first crew and called her home for several years. He lost many mates on her and only a few months later on his beloved HMAS Perth. I only wish she was found while he was alive.

I detest war, but I greatly appreciate what those 645 men sacrificed.

I doubt you'll find any person alive that actually enjoys it. Except filthbag Nazi's and radical muslims. And in the case of those you're talking about people that have been brainwashed. Oh and the US, "we love you while you serve a purpose". Sometimes I wonder if there was peace, what would these people do? Without a war to fight, some people, a lot unluckier than us, have nothing to live for.

Lets just be grateful we live in Australia. Trust me, things could be a lot worse.

Have met a few people over time that enjoys war, funnily enough mostly americans who had never been to one.

I am indeed very fortunate, first male on my dad's side to have not served in peace or war going back to prior to Boer War. Seen enough first hand of the effects of service/war to recommend it, hopefully my sons will avoid it too.

Agree Mark, we should be thankful to live here.

The Zapatistas in Mexico, the Sandinistas in Nicaragua, the Shining Path in Peru, the Real IRA, the Ulster Volunteer Force, the Khmer Rouge, FRETILIN/FALANTIL in East Timor, the Tamil Tigers, the Pathet Lao, ETA in Spain……just a random handful of the better known organisations that still currently, or have up until recently, advocated the use of violence and armed conflict to establish or further their respective causes.

To be fair, I wouldn't say any of the above will be converting to Islam any time soon. Would you ?

(Wouldn't think earning an Iron Cross will be on the horizon for any of those guys, either.)

But, yeah, by comparison, Australia is a walk in the park. Literally.

Yep. War never really achieves anything other then lessening of the world population. Do we really need that? I say NO.

Good to hear that lots of long suffering love ones will finally get closure.

Delivered people from slavery, brought various freedoms etc.

I'm no neo-con and I certainly don't support the war in Iraq but many wars are fought for very good reasons.

You left out the SPAF and one very close to my heart that doesn't even have a catch phrase named after it, Robert Mugabe.

Can't think of too many positive things that have come out of war. Most are fought under some kind of self justifying banner, but in reality few are conducted based on idealistic aims/reasons.

It would be a fair guess to say that most nations or movements entering war would argue that they are fighting it for a good reason.
