I don't normally whinge about umpiring, but there seemed some inconsistency with the 'holding the ball' decisions tonight. It seemed Geelong players were pinged more readily (Kelly, Stokes) the GC players (Ablett).

I've long since given up on 'improper disposal'. I don't think that rule exists anymore.

It really seemed like the sort of umpiring you got in junior matches where there was a side that was always going to get flogged so the umps would try and give them a go to make it a bit of a contest.

Ablett should have been pinged at least twice for holding the ball. That said, they rarely pinged him when he played for us either

the stokes one was a joke play on..one or two geelong players pinned down a goldy about 40m out from geelong goal in the last,he just laid there like he was planking..yep ball up and they threw the ball around alot learn how to handpass.

22 frees to our 9 was my overall concern. We touched the ball over 400 times, some sort of record that I would imagine.

The AFL/Demetriou/the benevolent dictator are getting awfully close to bringing the game into disrepute if they start so openly tampering with the Umps. This might be the beginning of the end for Andrew if the media gets a hold of this sort of shit and can offer tangible evidence of "fixing".

I think the AFL has made it pretty clear through the way the umps have consistently done it this year that dropping the ball is legal except in the most blatant cases as it will prevent a stoppage from forming.

Agree with the holding the ball calls. Its our weakness, maybe. The whole idea is to keep the play moving and umps have always trusted Geelong players to do that when first grabbed so they are given a chance. Last night it was as soon as the jumper was touched. Geelong is entitled to say the umps slowed the game up.

As for the frees ratio, as with the Carlton game we were second to the ball a lot. We were first to the ball against Collingwood and I think we did ok there.

Have been at the past two games live and I don't think we've received one in that time.

I totally agree here SJ, I've been to the last 4 and haven't seen a HTB for a while. The ones not given against Carlton were a joke. We had one against Kelly, from an umpire 50m from the play, yet when Judd is caught with ample opportunity, it isn't a free.

Last night's umpiring on both sides was a joke though. The Ling whack to the GC forward's head in the forward 50 was a total joke. That umpire needs to be refreshed with a run in the VFL.

this is something that really annoys me lately.... not isolated to last nights umpiring but I can't stand the current trend of the player just dropping tha ball and throwing his arms out trying to get a free when he is tackled... and getting away with it..
Also I noticed the other night i think in the Carlton Dees game that a carlton player did it, or tried to handball missed and dropped the ball and the melbourne player asked the umpire why it wasn't a free cos the ball the was dropped... the ump responded with something like 'he made an attempt thats all he has to do' pretty sure he has to dispose of it legally!!! Trying or not shouldn't come into it!!

I've bumped this thread (that I started) because I was bl@@dy annoyed at the inconsistency of holding the ball decisions tonight!

The worst had to be Menz, early in the 2nd Q - made all the play, and the muppet he made look like a fool ended up with a free for Menz holding the ball! I was spewin'

There were several others pinged against us, but StK could camp on the ball all night and earn a ball-up.

And the frees against us in the last Q! - If I didn't know better I'd say the umps were under instruction from AD to get StK back in the game. That free against Joel Corey for that superb tackel - What the??

Ok - I'm good now.

hmm, i thought we did pretty well out of the umpires tonight

Hmmm.. ok we'll let that go through to the keeper!

I couldn't believe one holding the ball decision given against Duncan. Think it was late in the third or in the last. The St Kilda player had hold of the pill and the ugly umpire gave it against Duncan. I couldn't believe what I saw!

Razor ray is in the same boat as that idiot crooked finger umpire in the cricket. Both are absolute tossers and spend far too much time trying to look good rather than umpiring the game. I put razor up there as one of the most frustrating umpires but the most arrogant goes to Vulgar Vozzo.

^^^ I think Lonergan may have been the offender here. He has been lucky with those hands; I saw him push Riewoldt under it a few times. Hope it doesn't creep into his game because it will cost us - and at the worst time.

Very strange inconsistent umpiring tonight, i remember Scarlo clearly pushed someone out, then as someone mentioned Menzel got pinged instantly and im sure i saw a high saints arm in that tackle.

FWIW, everyone complains about Selwood ducking would have seen how to combat that tonight, i think it was Gilbert ducked into Stokes, and Stokes tackle was perfect, didnt give away a free and got a holding the ball decision.

As this is my third entry on this thread, you might say I'm a bit p155ed off.

Here is a clip of the Menzel decision. Note that even Quartermain though he was hard done by!

that's just bloody pathetic that rule and it will be changed you can bet on that at the end of the year:thumbsu: you know there were absolute champions of the game who made that play one of their best assets, I mean Voss, Buckley, Buddha were always the first in for the hard ball and how many times would they get pinged if this rule was around 10 years ago:eek:

I also hate the play where it's like a rugby scrum and players are trying to get it out and you see a soccer tactic coming in now where a player will be on knees trying to get it out but will dive to the ground and players around him will also fall over but you can see they try their best to stay away from the back. I hate it and it's happening far too often. Players are dropping their knees in order to draw the free kick in the back. Many will argue Selwood does that but no he doesn't. Selwood hits a pack hard and get the ball 1st before getting a head high tackle but you never see him at the bottom of the pack drop his knees and go straight to ground trying to get a push in the back free kick.
Saw a couple in today's Melbourne v Fremantle game and glad the umpire didn't pay a couple of them
