I want to book a holiday along the Great Ocean Rd for early January but there are that many websites and stuff on the net, it's too confusing. Does anyone know an easy and reliable website which has cheap accommodation in this area?

you'll be pushing it to find anything this late, we rent our house out and its usually booked by september. at this stage theres probably no cheap ones left, but your best bet is to try one of the real estate agents down there cause the caravan parks will be well booked out

I had some luck.
I made an e-mail enquiry about one place, and they responded by saying that they had availabilities for those particular dates. So I called them up only to be told "Sorry we are all booked out, it's Pier-to-Pub weekend so there isn't going to be much available elsewhere."
I then informed that them the e-mail response claimed that there were availabilities at their place, which was met by a "Oh really? Well the person that sent it to you must have been dreaming that day." Just before I was about to crack the ********s and hang up, they gave me a phone number for an information service and suggested I call them. I was given 6 phone numbers. I had no luck with the first 5, but struck gold with the final number. Plus, I got a very good deal to cap it off.

Reminds me of a time about 10 years ago.
It was around 28 Dec and I was calling joints in Surfers Paradise from the RACV book trying to find somewhere to stay around new year's. All the usaul rebuttals, until finally I got some joint that had rooms at only about $30 a night.
This all sounded too good to be true, and when I asked the old duck for directions, she politley told me it was just past the post office on the left...... in Tambo (about 200km wet of Rockhampton)!
We ended up just going to Surfers anyway, and probably had more fun staying at the backpackers than a hotel.
