Bracken choice has Victoria stumped

Wisden Cricinfo Staff

October 15, 2003

There is never a lot of love lost between Victoria and New South Wales at the best of times, but Victoria's coach David Hookes and his captain Darren Berry are at a loss to understand why their left-armer Mathew Inness can't get considered for Australia ahead of Nathan Bracken from NSW.

The pair are the same age, 25 years, and are both left-arm fast bowlers. Inness has a better record: 178 wickets at 24.72 against Bracken's 80 at 30.45. Inness has twice taken 10 wickets in a match, while having six five-wicket bags, compared to one five-wicket bag by Bracken.

Inness hasn't even been selected for an Australia A side. Hookes told the Herald Sun in Melbourne: "As I've said many times, when they give out the baggy blue cap in NSW, they give you a baggy green in a brown paper bag as well to save making two presentations. I think Matty got very harshly treated when he was overlooked for the Australia A side last year, and I think he'd be a pretty disappointed bloke today."

Berry didn't want to comment on a selection issue but praised Inness's worth ethic and said he didn't have to comment, the statistics spoke for themselves.

This statement is spot on:
As I've said many times, when they give out the baggy blue cap in NSW, they give you a baggy green in a brown paper bag as well to save making two presentations.

The selectors obviously think Bracken has more to offer then Innes. Having toured to the sub-continent previously may have swayed their decision.

When's Inness moving to Sydney?

Bracken is a deadset hack. If he was a footballer he'd be Jason Wild, Matthew Capuano and David Sierakowski all rolled into one.

Matthew Inness is the best bowler outside of McGrath, Gillespie and Lee in this country, and considering the injury-prone nature of our attack, a workhorse like Inness should be next in line - someone who can just run in all day and take wickets.

If Bracken was a Victorian, he wouldn't even get a state game.

I live in Essendon and I've watched the ECC play at Windy Hill and I've seen Innes absoultely shred batsmen. He's a gun and that fact he's not even had a look in is because Border & Hohns treat Boon and Hilditch like a couple of little beyaches!! I hated Border when he played and I hate him so much more now it's not funny.

Innes may not be the 'next in line' but there are at least 6 fast bowlers in the domestic competition who deserve a place ahead of Bracken.
