Horsley vows to play again

By Jonathan Cook

WORDS of encouragement from his wife and a short, sharp shot of perspective have convinced Matt Horsley his National Soccer League career is on hold and not terminated.

The Perth Glory midfielder will have an operation to reconstruct his right knee this morning after snapping an anterior cruciate ligament in the team's 2-1 loss to his former club Wollongong on Sunday.

After enduring a period of resignation after the incident, Horsley is now convinced that in 12 months, perhaps earlier, he will be back to reignite his NSL career.

"I'm going to do my darndest to come back and be the best I can," he declared yesterday. "The drive is still there. I want to play.

"I know with the support staff (at the club), my wife, family and all the supporters out there that I'm going to give it a good go."

It had taken a phone call from his wife Deborah from home in Perth to a wounded Horsley in Wollongong to put the 31-year-old on the right track after thoughts of retirement had entered his mind.

She had "knocked some sense into me", Horsley said.

Late last year, the Horsley family had a far greater challenge to overcome after the passing of their daughter, Brook.

"I've had a lot of set backs. This is pretty minor in comparison to the bigger picture," he said.

"When you put things in perspective it's only a knee injury and knee injuries are a lot more commonplace nowadays and a lot easier to fix."

And confirmation that his disheartened mood had shifted to more positive ground arrived with typical Horsley humour.

"As (Deborah) said, at least you didn't damage your beautiful face. So, I was happy about that."

Horsley, who has played 347 NSL games, 284 of them for his hometown club Wollongong, felt in the best shape of his career before the injury.

Though his Glory contract concludes at the end of this season, he hopes to continue his career with the club.

"I'd like to play my career out at Perth because it's lovely over here," he said. "If my career is finished, which I don't think it is, I'm definitely going to reside in Perth because it's a beautiful city."
