I don't like bagging our players but Nichols was extremely bad against West Coast in his first game and will be dropped next week. Surely we have better youngsters playing for willy.

Nichols was so bad he was almost embarrasing to watch. Looked way out of his league.

Sometimes you need to see them in the seniors to know what they are really capable of, for such a small frame he would need a significant trick, I didn't see one

Gez pull ya heads in would ya!
Its he's first bloody game, so what

Have you heroes never had stagefright before? Wake up would you!

Big game to be thrown into, probably one of the biggest. He'll be better for the experience, and as someone said will be dying to make up for it.
He looked good during the NAB cup, so instead of crucifying a first gamer, how about trying to support him?

Ive seen him play a fair bit at Willy, and I'm not ready to put he's head on the chopping block yet! Especially seeings he's just come off the rookie list.
Everyones talking up Cox atm, so if he comes in next week and plays a bad game, do we instantly turn on him as the next failed draftee?

This sorta thing is why Bigfooty is looked down upon by so many, who would waste their time reading supporters cutting down their own players after one bloody game.

Hopefully he does get the chance to show a lot of people wrong, not only for he's benefit, but for the clubs! Which is what we all ultimately want right...? Wait that might not be such an easily answered question...

What are you on about? If you asked Danny to assess his first game how do you think how he would rate it? In football the law of the jungle applies and those who aren't ready are exposed. He's not up to the level at the moment and we're not the type of side that can afford passengers.

yeah agree invigoration. obvioulsy some people had quite high expectations for his first game....i saw him on the list before the game and automatically didnt think i should expect much from a first gamer. sure it wasnt the greatest game....but heck ud have to be a pretty special first gamer to do well in a game like that at subi against west coast who is the best team in the comp atm. Id like to see him come back but when he is more ready, at least he knows whats its all about now and hopefully work his arse off to make up for his errors.

Can't agree. Firstly I thought he was average in the nab cup. He looked slow and panicked. Maybe not by foot but in the mind.

I agree that players need time but the glaring thing about nicholls was that in both times I have seen him at senior level he seemed to lack something a midget seriously needs and thats footy smarts. Some kids can come out and have 3 touches in there first game and you know they are going to be good because they show that little something when they get near it.

Its just my opinion but based on what I have seen I would be very suprised if this kid makes it.

Well I'm a fan from what I've seen at training so let's hope he can put that together on field for when it counts. But how's this for interesting .... according to http://www.pro-stats.com.au/ at the bottom of the page where it says "player category leaders" click on it and a PDF will load. Nicholls is in a top 5 stat! Frees against though. H Shaw on top for kicks (50%long). H Shaw on top for Rebound 50m and N Maxwell on top for 1%'ers :thumbsu:

He's definitely not that bad all the time.

Sometimes we forget just how much pressure you'd experience playing your first real AFL game on television. And at age 19 to boot.

Some take to it like a duck to water, others clench up. Poor Nicho has done the latter.

No need to write him off just yet. He may make it, may not, but more opportunities may actually see him gain some confidence. He has reasonable athleticism for a midget and he can kick. Just hasn't had a good run on telly to date.

Didn’t see the game but in principle you can’t can a player after game in the big time. He does seem to have limitations though.

I don't like bagging our players

Easy solution to that.

Don't.

Nicholls had a poor debut. It happens, and a road trip against the reigning Premiers is the most difficult of circumstances.

Nicholls may or may not make it (rookies have a low hit/miss ratio, so we have to be pragmatic). But he should not be judged on one game.

Nicholls was bad?
I noticed how hard he was trying and he was fearless about it. I hope every debutant can show that much courage in their first game, especially when its as daunting as WA vs reigning champs!

He made obvious mistakes but even Buckley would've made mistakes in his debut match. I think we have a star in the making if he can improve on his skills and reading of the play, because this kid has balls.

I agree with this statement. He was trying his guts out, it just seemed that he made a few blues at the wrong time and the ball didn't bounce his way on occasion. Couldn't question his effort and now he's got that one out of the way, I could see him settling down in his next game to be a handy player. Bit harsh to bury him after his debut.

I'm not sure if he'll make it but the one thing he seems to have in spades is desire. Whether it is enough, i don't know, but it's a commendable attribute.

Thought he was good. Moved like a genuine footballer.

Just gotta learn not how to give away free kicks and the ball and he'll be a gem.

Thats very similiar to a young kid who debuted some 12 or so yrs ago by the name of S Burns. He was very hungry and never got scared. He developed a massive body to back it up and has become a very serviceable player who will go into the Hall of Fame for the biggest club in Australia. All desire and courage takes is a body to back it.

If Nicholls can grow and be as strong as Burns and have at least REASONABLE skills then he can be our hard-nut for the next decade as Pendles, Thomas and Heater do the skills-testing and teasing in the other department.

Thought this was worth posting:

Tough nut Nicholls earns his chance
Young midfielder Daniel Nicholls spoke to collingwoodfc.com.au after making his AFL debut against West Coast in round two.

20-year-old Nicholls, who was recently elevated off the rookie list following the long-term injury to Sean Rusling, enjoyed an excellent pre-season after a strong first year at Collingwood in 2006 playing for Williamstown.

He was ecstatic to be a late inclusion to the Collingwood team for Saturday night’s showdown at Subiaco, after a groin complaint forced Ryan Lonie out.

“Mick (Malthouse) came up and told me I would be playing. I was pretty excited and pumped for it”, Nicholls said after training at the Lexus Centre on Tuesday.

Recruited from Rowville and the Dandenong Stingrays in the Victorian TAC Cup Under 18 competition with the 18th overall selection in the 2005 rookie draft, Nicholls possesses attributes that will quickly endear him to Magpie fans.

Renowned for his hardness at the ball, Nicholls, who stands at 177 centimetres, has a lovely left foot kick and excellent pace.

Nicholls was told by Collingwood’s chief of football Geoff Walsh a couple of weeks ago that his impressive pre-season had won him a spot on the senior list.

“I’ve just got to keep taking the next step, and rising for the challenges that get thrown at me.”

As for his first game against the Eagles, lining up on premiership players Daniel Kerr and Rowan Jones meant Nicholls was thrown into the deep end from the word go, and while he didn’t win a lot of the ball (two kicks, one handpass), the experience was invaluable.

“The game itself was good, fast paced. I did struggle a bit, I was just a bit eager with the tackles and that, but it’s just a learning curve for me, and I can hopefully move forward from here.”
