we wasted ou 1999 draft we could of got.......... the list go's on  :thumbsd:  :thumbsd:

At least Fiora played played some footy for us and is still playing and has actually been OK for the Saints so far this year.
There were more 'wasted' picks than Fiora in that draft.
Try Cupido at No 6, Roach at No 7 and Beetham at No 9.
Cupido was soft and didn't want to work hard, Roach never played a senior game and Beetham walked away from footy altogether.

38 of 87 selections are still in the AFL, now in their eighth seasons. How does that compare to other drafts?

Yeah but Collingwood Got Neon Leon and Ben Johnson aswell as Roach.

Brisbane might be able to console themselves over the fact they got Jonothan Brown at pick 30. Do you reckon the recruiter feels too bad about that draft??

The point is that on top of Fiora - (Did Fremantles eyes pop out of thier heads when we read out our pick) - we got Poyaz,Homewood and Mills.

and then to top it all off ......

we appointed Frawley as our coach the following year.

That was a good draft for us compared to 1991. :o

We had 7 National Draft selections who between them played a total of zero senior games. (our first pick was 49)

We traded 3 ND selectiond for players - Todd Breman (25 games), Stevan Jackson (21) and Steven O'Dwyer (5).
Getting "Strawbs" O'Dwyer cost us pick 3. :(

I doubt any club in any other ND could "top" that.

Plenty could. I wish people would educate themselves a little before just reading out one clubs list of picks.

In 1991 the draft age was increased from 16 to 17. That meant that clubs were going through the same talent pool as the previous year - looking at blokes who hadn't been in the top-100 last time around. It was the last year of the under-19s so all the good Vics were tied to Melbourne clubs. Adelaide was coming in and so had the good SA kids locked-up.

Hence we traded away our picks. Hence we paid high-prices in picks (they were worthless anyway). It was an attempt to salvage something from a nightmare.

Other than Shane Crawford do you feel like listing all the players we missed and should have picked up?

Really?

Why don't you list them then? I'd be interested and amazed to see a less successful draft.

Just look at 1991 then - this time have a look at the other clubs as well.

Collingwood
Kane Purcell - 0
Todd Curley - 3
Bruce Italiano - 0
Greg Turner - 0
Jon Lister - 0
Brendan Burrows - 0

Even the teams that did games out of their picks hardly mattered

Melbourne
Darren Kowal - 105
Jason Norrish - 20
Andrew Lamprill - 36
Phil Gilbert - 25
Matthew McKay - 0
Hayden Kilmartin - 0
Micah Berry - 0
Jason Dullard - 0
Nick White - 0
Michael Pickering (trade) - 0

If that is 'success' then let-em.

All the drafts before 92 should be ignored. Until the under-19s and Vic Metro zoning, and the end of the WA and SA morotoriums.

The draft was not the primary mechanism for getting players back then. You were as likely to get guys from the under-19s.

As uneducated as I am, even I can see both those examples were more successful than ours. ;)

I know Richmond were the best side in 1972. No matter what I saw with my own eyes, it's in the historical facts and figures that Carlton were. Circumstances are irrelevant.

I doubt any other club in any ND could top the first 7 picks not playing a single game. That's educated, uneducated, arrogant, ignorant or otherwise.

Somehow I think that a focus on pre-92 drafting is a bit of red herring. It just didn't matter. And there were plenty performing just like we were.
