Looking at our 1980 List you can gauge the composition of talent that is required to win a premiership. How do we compare today??? Only two champions in Brown and Richardson falls well short of the ones we had back then. Do you agree with this breakup of our list?. We still had duds back then and look at our up and comming youth. Have I overestimated or been too hard on anyone?

CHAMPIONS
--------------------------------

Robert Wiley (Ruck rover)
Michael Roach (Full Forward)
Kevin Bartlett (Half Forward Flanker)
Barry Rowlings (Half Forward Flanker)
Geoff Raines (Centre)

PLAYERS CRITICAL IN THIER POSITION

Dale Weightman (Forward Pocket) - Only 20 at time so hadn't his his straps yet.

Mark Lee (Ruck) - Only around 20 at time

All I'll say is that I don't think we have any champions at the minute.

I'm too young to give an accurate appraisal of the 1980 team.

scrimy wasnt a dud he was hard at it

I just remember him as a fringe player who only got a run off the bench if we were hit by injuries.

Also i dont think the comparison is futile when you compare the number of players of particular worth that a side requires to go places.

Arguably five champions and plenty of players who would have other clubs trying to swoop on in the preseason.

Our plodders would have been in and out of the side unlike a Fiora getting a game every week. The duds hardly played so it didnt affect us.

Well even the current Richmond team would cream the 1980s side, even in their prime
Not exactly the easiest thing to compare

What games were you going to last year????????????

Were we playing football in another competition that I missed?

Our current list that finished last in 2004 would absolutely cream any team from the 80s
The competition was only just coming out of being an amateur league, players still had full time jobs
Physical development and team strategy is 100 times where it was 25 years ago, the players of the 80s wouldn't know what hit them if they saw a game played with the pace and athleticism that it is today

You're in fantasy land if you think otherwise

Dont underestimate the physical fitness of players back then. The pre seasons were grueling. Team strategy?? Ill take whatever strategy Jewel had over what Frawley had.

Duds were still Duds and champions were still champions.

All memorable names, but that comes with winning grand finals. If todays team can win the big one in the coming years, immortality will be theirs. Throwing your body on the line for immortality is an idea that has been lost a Tigerland.

I'm sure Bruce would be over the moon to know that you think it was critical that he was left on the interchange. ;)

Yep got me there. ;)

I pasted the names from a site provided in another thread and left the positions they lined up in the GF.

No, Bruce was a pretty good ruck rover from memory. We would have beaten the scum by more if he was not injured.

Areed, now it's time for a new breed of champions like deledio's and the tambling's.another thing we hardly ever made mistakes
in 1980 but we forced other sides to make mistakes with our enormous pressure each week.now tell me when was the last time you saw our current
side put pressure on the opposition,i will round 1 2004 end of story!

You seriously need to get a grip on reality, obviously hanging on to your youth or something.
If the 1980 Grand Final team played in the competition this year, they would be wooden spooners. Even the players who played back then can't believe the pace of the game and the skills compared back to when they play

When things aren't going well then perhaps people start thinking that they could just step in and do a better job, but in reality its a load of crap.
Even we gave some of the better teams a run for their money and in this day and age a team only has to be 5% off their game and the spooners can beat the reigning premiers.
Do you honestly believe that a premiership team from the 80s could match 95% of what the current game is like

Keep dreaming

I think what most people are trying to say, that all being equal, if the 1980 side was trained for football 2005 style, our current duds would make handy reserves players!!!

That is exactly right!!!

Sure you would need to factor in those things.

I still maintain that the football ability of the 1980 list would exceed our current team to embarassing proportions.

The pace of the game has increased through extra emphasis on fitness and also a greater emphasis on recruiting players on beep tests rather than whether they are cutting up opposition in thier local league.

You've forgotten that the current team already are the wooden spooners. So by your calculations, it would be an even match.

HEART ?

COURAGE ?

BACKBONES ?

The likes of Wiley ,Raines , KB , not enough skill there ?

Cloke , Roach , and Lee couldn`t match it with the likes of Brogan and Lade ?

I think you under sell how good our team was back then , Brogan and Lade would cr.p themselves at the sight of Mark Lee & Co. now.

Mick Malthouse in full flight and Francis Bourke ?

I would have another think about it
