What do you think we need to do to win the Replay Grand Final?

To win the Replay Grand Final I think we need the following:

- We need our midfield to fire. Our A-Grade group of mids in Dane Swan, Alan Didak, Scott Pendlebury and Luke Ball didn't have stellar game's and went missing on some of the crucial moments of the game. We need them to fire next week to have a serious chance.

- Need to shut down/control Goddard, Hayes and Montagna. They easily outplayed our midfield and were able to break our so called indestructible 'swarm' through the midfield. I think Goddard is the man we need to stop the most, Hayes did win the Norm Smith but I thought Goddard was the more dangerous player and he is one of those players, like Didak, who can win a game off his boot.

- We need go back to our game against Geelong and try and re-implement that kinda of pressure and tackling, like the media call it, the Collingwood 'swarm'. Saint Kilda seemed to have our match with the swarm and were able to make it more a one on one contest at times instead of one against a few (even if it was visual pressure).

- Like Mick said, St Kilda had 51 rebound 50s which is massive. We need to stop players such as Gwilt. This was able to happen because of our lack of a 'forward press'ure' and choosing the wrong targets and choices inside 50.

- Our forward 50 pressure fell away in the Grand Final, especially in the 3rd and 4th quarters when the game was to be won. St Kilda was able to rebound so much because we weren't able to swarm inside the forward 50 and apply pressure to strangle them into making an error and receiving a goal.

- Like I said we need to choose the right targets within the forward 50. We were often kicking into dangerous positions with Collingwood players outnumbered or in a bad position to pose a threat or apply pressure. This became evident when Beams kicked to Davis who had a 1 on 1 contest on the boundary line.

- Control Riewoldt. Simple. N. Brown did a pretty damn good job and at times I was closing my eyes when it was 1 on 1 with him and Riewoldt but he was able to keep him to a fairly average game. However I think N. Brown will be even under more pressure this week as he will have to recover and replay on Riewoldt, a very hard feat. He will need all the help he can get from the back 6 and maybe, just maybe Presti might take Davis spot this week and help N. Brown with Riewoldt. Who knows.

- Accuracy in front of goal. Sure their was 7 rushed behinds but we still had ample opportunities at goal, especially during the end of the second and throughout the third quarter. It just doesn't cut it at AFL level.

- Keeping momentum and flow. We pride ourselves on playing fast paced football where we play on and continue our press down the wings, but we seemed to only play it for the 1st quarter. This may be due to how quiet our A-Grade midfielder but we still should of showed composure and taken the game to our terms and played how we play football, not into St Kildas palms.

- Our first quarter is crucial. If we are able to kick more then five goals and restrict the opponent to a goal, then we can use that as a base to continue upwards. We are a confidence team and when we are on fire the players all use at and continue onto a win.

Thats all I can think of at the moment.

A great thing to take out of this match is that all our young and non-playing grand finalist now have absorbed the pressure, intensity and strain of the grand final and should be more mature, composed and know how to deal with the pressure and strains of the grand final. I definitely think we can still win this, all are players will have matured from the draw and will improve.

you cant win sorry

There is a difference between can't (i.e Carlton) and hope that we lose.

Carlton fans just don't like the thought of us getting closer to their 16 premierships, as they know that they won't win one in the next 5-6 years at least.

How do you guys win?

Concentrate on winning the game and don't think about past failures. If the past failures get into the players minds, pressure will mount and Collingwood will not win.

Another person feeding off the media.... how the hell do you know that our players are thinking that way?

Supporters thinking that way have stuff all to do with the outcome of a game.

Check and see which of the two clubs has biggest GF win/loss ratios and then your theory and the medias theory gets blown out of the water.

Its also like saying St Kilda should worry more about not winning the wooden spoon ... they have after all won it 26 times... and they joined the VFL I think the same year as the Pies who have won it twice...

Everyone needs to contribute, cloke needs to back himself and kick straight, numbers to the contest, SWARM like we did Geelong, I felt the saints made us look slow yesterday. Maxwell outstanding effort for touching the ball before it went through for a goal. massive save!

If Collingwood are serious about winning the gf then under no circumstance should Leon Davis get a game .6 touches are simply not up to it in a gf .The forward chase and tackling that he was supposed bring was non existant.Get rid of him ,either
Goldsack or Lonckyer offer ten times more than this serial choker.

Montagna outlined what they did on the footy show this morning. He said they kicked long when in attack and and got stoppages in defense which stopped the collingwood flow and ability for players to get space and receive kicks/handballs and continue the flow to the foreward 50.

Making the most of opportunities is the key to collingwood. They were in the box seat to build more momentum and be in front by 5-6 goals and half time or early in the 3rd but yet again, key goal kickers can't kick goals that low division players kick every week at local footy. Sure the pressure is extremely high but it's been happening all bloody year.

Tag Fisher out of the bloody game and go inside 50 more effectively and that means not bombing the ball long. We must tackle more as well they had 20 more tackles then us. We killed them yesterday we had 20 odd more inside 50s then them if we do that again next week we will win the Premiership.

Ok, here we go, my take on why/how we can/will win next week.

1. Use our facilities; We have the Westpac Centre, from 30 minutes after that game last night, we were in full recovery mode. We have to recover better then Stkilda. Use every tool at our disposal, from sea baths to altitude chambers, use it all.

2. Our dpeth; USE IT. Nick Maxwell said "44 players went to war", and although the war analogy may be a bit of a stretch, it was tough, and this morning, 44 players are hurting. We have Goldsack, Presti (if fit), Medhurst, Lockyer, Anthony, Wood etc etc, use them. We have to make at least 2 changes, if not more.

3. Open up the game; At every chance, play on, no slow play, kick the ball long to even contests (2 on 2, 3 on 3 etc) but at all times move it quickly. In the 3rd quarter yesterday, we slowed our movement down too much.

4. Ask for new umpires; Ok, so this may be seen as a whinge, seeing as we won the free kick count 17-14, but it was more the way they umpired. They didn't pay a pack holding the ball all day, and this worked into Stkilda's favour, creating more stoppages for Hayes to kill us at. If a player drags the ball in, pay holding the ball. And also, if a player gets hit late after taking a mark, pay 50 (Blair and Leigh Brown).

5. Take no prisoners; We know now, that no matter what, one team will win, and one will lose next week, even if it takes extra time.
What we need to do is be ruthless, both at the ball and the opposition. I couldn't care less if we get 6 players suspended next week, there is no tomorrow.

6. Use our coaching staff; I have no doubt that Ross Lyon is the best matchday coach, or at least the best who will be there next week, but we have a better coaching staff as far as depth goes. Mick needs to use Buckley, Neeld, Watters, Hudghton, Rocca and anyone else all week, and on matchday, and take in all offers of advice and suggestions.

WE CAN WIN, AND WE SHOULD WIN, but we have to be smart, we have to be ruthless (both in selection and in the game) and we have to use what we have paid for.

GO PIES, I still believe.:D

Look inside.

Seriously, especially in the 4th, there were instances where we had 1, 2 and even 3 players running right through the square with only 1 Saints player to cover them. We could have switched to 'attack formation' and spread their defenders or simply bombed right into the goal Square.

It felt like we went back into the shell in the last, albeit defending like champions. Top effort, we just need to re-fire the arrogance.

all it will take for the pies to win is to kick straight when kicking for goal.

how do you all think T.Cloke will react this week after missing two very getable shots?

The same as Nick Riewoldt will respond for missing 3 very easy shots, they will dust themselves off, and if either of them kicks an early goal next week, their confidence will be restored.

I love the fact everyone's talking about Cloke's kicks for goal, Riewoldt took that great mark in the 3rd quarter, went back from 25 out and missed badly.

Who's the better kick for goal, Riewoldt or Cloke? After yesterday, I can't split them.

Play a leading forward to hit the ball up rather than bombing it long.

Isolate the St Kilda defence.

Tag Brendan Goddard with Heath Shaw.

Tag Sam Fisher with Tyson Goldsack.

Tell Harry OB'rien and Scott Pendlebury - it is just another game so they don't get the yips. Both will be better for the run.

Break the play up and go through the corridor some times.

Play on and challenge the game.

The best thing that happened to Collingwood in the last quarter was when we fell behind. Then we had to attack the game and take it on and go down the corridor. Same as the Melbourne drawn game.

Play the game desperately instead of sticking to the outward boundary riding game which gives St Kilda time to position themselves.

The longer we hold the ball, the more chance St Kilda have to flood back.

No matter how it seems....

it could get worse!

touche'

reiwoldt can be wobbly in front of goal as well, he should have kicked those goals too, for some reason clokes misses seem more pronounced, i personally think cloke is more likely to miss from 25-30 out than what reiwoldt is. perception is a funny thing though. would like to see the goals to points ratio of both of those players this year. will be interesting to see what happens if either of those guys miss an early one.

Riewoldt is much better in general play than Cloke, Cloke's kicking is inexcusable for an AFL forward being paid as much as he is.

When Cloke was having a shot from 15 m out, I thought he was going to miss and I am pretty sure a massive proportion of Collingwood supporters were worried too, just unacceptable.

hopefully not as bad as me, I announced to the family he just cost us the premiership when he missed the second shot

yeah, i must admit, being a non-partisan supporter, i said to my mates that i was glad to not have any feelings one way or the other on that game, because if it was freo in that position id be a mess. if you survived through that game as a supporter than all credit to ya :thumbsu: i wonder how many heart attacks and strokes were had by pies/saints supporters over yesterday (none i hope), id say the blood pressure would have been right up there on you guys
