What do you think we need to do to win the Replay Grand Final?
To win the Replay Grand Final I think we need the following:
- We need our midfield to fire. Our A-Grade group of mids in Dane Swan, Alan Didak, Scott Pendlebury and Luke Ball didn't have stellar game's and went missing on some of the crucial moments of the game. We need them to fire next week to have a serious chance.
- Need to shut down/control Goddard, Hayes and Montagna. They easily outplayed our midfield and were able to break our so called indestructible 'swarm' through the midfield. I think Goddard is the man we need to stop the most, Hayes did win the Norm Smith but I thought Goddard was the more dangerous player and he is one of those players, like Didak, who can win a game off his boot.
- We need go back to our game against Geelong and try and re-implement that kinda of pressure and tackling, like the media call it, the Collingwood 'swarm'. Saint Kilda seemed to have our match with the swarm and were able to make it more a one on one contest at times instead of one against a few (even if it was visual pressure).
- Like Mick said, St Kilda had 51 rebound 50s which is massive. We need to stop players such as Gwilt. This was able to happen because of our lack of a 'forward press'ure' and choosing the wrong targets and choices inside 50.
- Our forward 50 pressure fell away in the Grand Final, especially in the 3rd and 4th quarters when the game was to be won. St Kilda was able to rebound so much because we weren't able to swarm inside the forward 50 and apply pressure to strangle them into making an error and receiving a goal.
- Like I said we need to choose the right targets within the forward 50. We were often kicking into dangerous positions with Collingwood players outnumbered or in a bad position to pose a threat or apply pressure. This became evident when Beams kicked to Davis who had a 1 on 1 contest on the boundary line.
- Control Riewoldt. Simple. N. Brown did a pretty damn good job and at times I was closing my eyes when it was 1 on 1 with him and Riewoldt but he was able to keep him to a fairly average game. However I think N. Brown will be even under more pressure this week as he will have to recover and replay on Riewoldt, a very hard feat. He will need all the help he can get from the back 6 and maybe, just maybe Presti might take Davis spot this week and help N. Brown with Riewoldt. Who knows.
- Accuracy in front of goal. Sure their was 7 rushed behinds but we still had ample opportunities at goal, especially during the end of the second and throughout the third quarter. It just doesn't cut it at AFL level.
- Keeping momentum and flow. We pride ourselves on playing fast paced football where we play on and continue our press down the wings, but we seemed to only play it for the 1st quarter. This may be due to how quiet our A-Grade midfielder but we still should of showed composure and taken the game to our terms and played how we play football, not into St Kildas palms.
- Our first quarter is crucial. If we are able to kick more then five goals and restrict the opponent to a goal, then we can use that as a base to continue upwards. We are a confidence team and when we are on fire the players all use at and continue onto a win.
Thats all I can think of at the moment.
A great thing to take out of this match is that all our young and non-playing grand finalist now have absorbed the pressure, intensity and strain of the grand final and should be more mature, composed and know how to deal with the pressure and strains of the grand final. I definitely think we can still win this, all are players will have matured from the draw and will improve.
