How good/bad is this rain?!

Awesome to finally see a steady, sustained downpour!

Getting plenty of it here in the bayside!

Have there been any reports on how much has hit the catchment areas?

Talked to a few people involved in climataology early last week and funnily enough one said that things looked good for some decent rain about now, they just didn't know where exactly along the east coast. One said that they needed at least 50mm for the ground to reach saturation point and for run-off to start happening. I think most of the catchment had that this morning so whatever falls from now on is going into the dam.

Should keep falling until early friday morning. Being an weather watcher I'd guess we'd get another 50mm at least which would probably up the dams about 10-15%. Not enough for water resrtiction to be lightened, but welcome nonetheless and bloody good for winter rainfall up this way.

Even better news is that it should be fine for Saturday night, dry and cool - making those jammies do down rather well!

Plenty falling up here, the creek out the back is filling nicely, should get all the local creeks and rivers flowing nicely into Somerset Dam.

Interestingly, the Southern Oscillation Index has swung well away from the drought-bringing El Nino to a neutral reading over the past few months, meaning we will at least be experiencing normal weather for the time being, and hopefully it continues swinging to the La Nina pattern which brings plenty of rain.

Sounds very complicated, but the "plenty of rain" bit sounds promising.

The Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) is calculated using the barometric pressure difference between Tahiti and Darwin. The SOI is one indicator of the stage of El Niño or La Niña events in the tropical Pacific Ocean. It is best considered in conjunction with sea-surface temperatures, which form the basis of the outlooks. A moderate to strongly negative SOI (persistently below –10) is usually characteristic of El Niño, which is often associated with below average rainfall over eastern Australia, and a weaker than normal monsoon in the north. A moderate to strongly positive SOI (persistently above +10) is usually characteristic of La Niña, which is often associated with above average rainfall over parts of tropical and eastern Australia, and an earlier than normal start to the northern monsoon season.

The Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) remained neutral in April with a value of −3 following the −1 in March. The approximate 30-day value as at 19th May was −2.

A large body of cool subsurface water persists in the central to eastern Pacific, thereby raising the potential for a La Niña to develop in 2007. Furthermore, computer models are predicting a La Niña to develop during winter

So it is bobbling around slightly on the EL Nino side of neutral, which is not bad considering we were in heavy El Nino over the summer. And the predictions are showing La Nina to be more likely than El Nino this coming summer.

this time yesterday the old man was getting the new water tank installed.....now he thinks he is the messiah!!!:o this morning he insisted i call him 'rain man'

Is he doing a rain dance.

Its bucketing down here, has been for over 24 hours.

Our local dam at Somerset is already 30%, but we gotta share with the rest of the SE, thats why we are on level5.

Harsh when u can see the creek out the back overflowing.

Sunshine Coast are next to share. They have NO restrictions now,and are not happy with having to share their water and have restrictions soon.A heap of people at work live up the coast, and are not impressed.

Well I can't say I blame him.

If as they say we have a sheep weather warning for sleet on Friday, I wonder how the Gabba will hold up.Hope the players don't freeze at training on Friday. Get the heaters out early guys.

I've been waiting 5 years to play a footy game in the slop and when it looks like we will get the sustained rains that would give me this it's the bloody mid season break:(

Had to add this, hope I did it right but whenever I hear El Nino I can't help but remember this sketch from the late Chris Farley on SNL.
