Ok, I know its been near on impossible to create a fair draw for a while given a 16 team competition with 10 teams in Melbourne,
But I think the new 18 team competition will allow the AFL to create a more fair and even draw,

When there are 18 teams, I think the season should be reduced to 17 rounds where you play every team once,
This would include 2 weekends off (or split rounds) and would facilitate the permanent re-introduction of State of Origin,

9 teams would play 9 home games and 8 Away games, whilst the other 9 teams would have 8 home games and 9 away games,
I know this doesnt seem fair, but the fixture would effectively run over 2 seasons, so the following season, these would reverse,

How it works:
Every Melbourne club would have to play an away game in each state,
Take the hawks for example:
In season 2012: Play the Dockers, Crows, Swans and Gold Coast Away and play the other interstate teams at home.
In season 2013: Play the Eagles, Power, Western Sydney and the Suns away and play the other interstate teams at home,
Keep finals system the same with a top 8.

Ideally I'd like to see a 20 team competition:
I would add a Tasmanian team (cannot believe Western Sydney and the Gold Coast got one first) and either a NT or a third WA team.

You would create 2 Conferences, each with 2 divisions,
A team plays everyone in their division twice (home and away) and plays everyone else in the competition once (including other conference), this home/away situation would work the same as the 18 team fixture over a two season rotation,
This means there would be a 23 round season, a bit long for my liking, but something I think the AFL is introducing anyway

The Finals system would work like this:
Top 2 in each division would play off, the winner would play the winner of the other division in the same conference. Then the two conference winners would play off in the Grand Final,

I know people will say that you dont play certain teams often enough, I havent thought it through completely, but you could remake the conferences/division or whatever every 4 or 6 years

Nah.

For every problem conferences solve they will be create a bigger problem. Conferences would in the long term result in a less even competition.

The biggest thing your forgetting is the product. Footbal is now just a product for TV and ground attentdances. You reduce the season by 5 rounds and your product value. Less TV rights money, less profits, less gate takings. The season length will never be reduced.

Nah, here is the simpler solution.....

In the 17 or 18 Club competition, every Club plays every other Club x 1 game per year. Over the course of 2 Seasons every Club plays every other Club both home and away (i.e. 2011 - Adelaide vs. Sydney, 2012 - Sydney vs. Adelaide)

Major Features:

- A 17/18 Round Home & Away Season.

- No more whingeing that the draw is biased by who has to play who and at which Stadium each Season.

- A shorter Home & Away Season (better for the players, they'll be fresher in the Finals.)

- The AFL can't manipulate the matchups each Season for their own greedy purposes.

- No need for the stupid Split Round anymore.
