HP Mini Laptop - Bunch of Q's

My family have combined our Xmas spending for my nephew to buy him a little HP laptop which runs it's own HP version of Linux.

I am a competent OS installer, I run Win XP and Win 7 in a dual OS on my PC and have put Ubuntu onto a HP laptop I have that came with Vista. I wanted to know though if anyone had any specific experience formatting these with the HP linux to put say XP on it?

Also if we stay with Linux I was wondering if anyone knew of parental control software for linux (he is 7) as his parents would like to have some control over where he goes.

I also would like a mail client that will essentially allow me to block every email and then only let through specific addresses, anyone know of a good program?

If you are thinking about formatting and installing XP, beware. I have an Acer and it has a hidden partition that if removed, prevents the OS from starting. I don't know if the HP's are the same but I would ghost the current configuration before doing anything..
