With Ablett gone it makes it so much easier to keep players - there would have been major casualties if he had stayed with the salary cap. Plus the draft picks to be used at a crucial time and the chance to even trade a bit.

It was always going to happen so if club is smart it can turn this into a positive. There still some outstanding players with a bit left. I see this oppportunity as almost a good thing - the possibility that the club would have said to 1 or 2 premiership players they had to go was terrible and could have had a greater negative impact.

Only thing is coach has to go - his time is up.

Yes it is, although i would have LOVED Ablett to played out his career at Geelong, it's now a good oppertunity for Geelong to draft well and become a dominant force again in a few years, i have no doubt we will be challenging for the premiership soon again. We still have a very strong list and some very good young players coming through. We can easily turn Ablett leaving into a positive, but right now it's a BIG negative.

IMO this is a positive. Teams that have a period of dominance often wait too long to rebuild, or to at least go through some period of transition. As a result they end up in no-mans land for a long time. The woes of ESS post 01 and BRIS post 04 are good examples of this.

But Ablett's and Thompon's decisions have forced the clubs hand. It has to start looking toward a new era now. The two 1st rounders, the salary cap room we now have, and the appointment (i hope) of Hinkley are all going to be big bonuses in getting this new era on the road. I'm excited about it all really.

Interestingly I was thinking of Hawthorn in the 70's and 80's and their success. I know they had a zoning advantage, but I think the biggest advantage they had was that changed coaches. Good coaches. Kennedy, then Parkin, then Jeans. Allowed the new coach to do a clean out, new ideas. If Bomber goes, I will wish him well and be very grateful. But it might not be a bad thing.

And what about Essendon and Brisbane? After their premiership years they held onto their coaches too long, maybe? Matthews and Sheedy outstayed their time.

This is a HUGE opportunity and ultimately will be proven healthy for the club.

The positives
1. 2 x 1st round draft picks in 2012.
2. loads of $$$ to recruit some class big bodies for Ruck and Mids in re-season draft.
3. Opportunity for young blokes to step up and we have a good crop of them too. Namely, Brown, Hogan, Duncan, Menzel, T.Hunt, Laidler, Gillies, Drum, Simpson, West, Motlop and Vardy. We are in a good position with young talent.

The possible positive
1. A new coach...we can only hope. Bomber has been great, but it's time for him to leave. His heart isn't in it. Sando is the man in my opinion, Young, Passionate, Geelong through and through, and he is the best assistant in the business.

It is all up...as Geelong supporters we need to move on, stop insulting the rest of the team by crying for Gary like he gave us two flags by himself. We still have the best midfield in the land. Can't wait for 2011.

I thought exactly the same thing today.

Hawthorn did get a massive leg up in that era from zoning (we didn't fair so well, though the Riverina area wasn't too bad). But that aside you are right i think. By turning coaches over at the right time Hawthorn were able to extend their 'window' by injecting new ideas into the club and invigorating the playing group. It didn't get too stale.

IMO if Thompson coaches next year it will be much the same as Matthews coaching for two 'dead' seasons after 04. It is time for a new coach. I want Hinkley as i think he will retain Geelongs 'traditional game' - free flowing and aesthetically attractive. But i think he would bring a new perspective to that style.

Should mention i also loved his work of a half-bank flank!

I want Bomba to stay
I want us to do well and then we can give him the proper send off he deserves.
Call me sentimental but after the last 24 hours I would like to see some kind of old fashion feeling.
Who knows this might be the challenge Bomba needs, drawing up anew game plan.

Maybe the cats should take Collingwoods idea and have Bomber as the coaching director and have Sando or Hinkley as senior coach? Geelongs picks for Gaz will be ok compensation, if we use them correctly, which I am sure Wells will do. I reckon Varcoe should play in the Midfield and possible rotate with Menzel, kinda like the Chappy and Ablett set up this year.
Just an opinion...

^^^^Mooney man

I agree, Varcoe should run through the midfield and take on Ablett's role.

If Bomber coaches next year it probably will be in the type of 'hand-over' role you mention.

I am hoping that doesn't happen, that he goes to Essendon, and that we sign Hinkley. I think that is better long term. It seems likely that Bomber wants to be involved with the new era at the Don's. I don't blame him for that. Though the media will paint him as a hypocrite after all he has had to say about Ablett.

I think Varcoe in the middle would be exciting with his pace and skill, and if Bomber does go to Essendon, so be it. Apparently loyalty doesnt mean anything in footy anymore (not mention any particular name that starts with an A & ends in a tt, with an L & e in the middle, because that would be petty)
Hinkley would be a great get, take one back from the GC and the playing group like him. I am of the opinion that it will not take the cats to long to bounce back, we have the core of the players that made a prelim this year, and think that there is too much doom and gloom. We have quality young players, that now will have the oppurtunity to play next year, with the before mentioned core.

Yes . Its time to move.

Sanderson or Hinkley would be a better bet than a burnt out Thommo..... (but we still love you).

Neeld at Collingwood is a Geelong boy who has had a big hand in the Collingwood set up also. I think he would be a good appointment - up with the zone idea and might be able to marry it with the Geelong attack at all costs game we love.

The next 4 weeks will be interesting and the next 4 years could be surprising.

Now I know everyone is of the belief that Hinkley or Sando would be the best bet as new coach, but what about McCartney? He was voted best assistant in 2010.
Why is everyone so sold on Sando anyway? What makes him so perfect for the head job?

If we use our picks smartly, (hoipefully in the 2012 draft) with our cap room and 2013 free agency looming. Geelong will be a very desirable place to play..

We will be a big hunter if free agency, we could go straight back to the top
