So it's off season and what better time for a barely relevant hypothetical thread. As we search for a key forward and future spine this off season many posters mention the future poaching of Jesse Hogan from Melbourne (both facetiously and with intent). If this trade was to go ahead Melbourne would want something substantial and Hogan would get snapped up very quickly if he entered either draft so we would need to arrange a trade with Melbourne. How do bigfooty posters see this trade happening? It wouldn't get done on picks alone so which players do you see us sacrificing? Depending on their development I see a 3 years older Crozier and Neale on the trade block along with our 1st rounder. Thoughts?

These threads always suck because nobody wants to trade anyone, especially not best 22 players.

But the players we can most afford to trade and have enough currency to make that trade work are Steven Hill and Zac Clarke.

We have quite a few outside mids waiting in the wings (Morabito, Sheridan, Crozier, Sylvia, Simpson etc) who could fill Hill's role. We have a glut of Rucks when Griffin comes back. We can't afford to trade any of our clearance midfielders (especially as Mundy is a free agent next year and could possibly leave), and nobody else in the team would have enough trade value to snare a top KPP like Hogan.

Although if you are talking about a hypothetical trade in 2 years time, then it's possible that a few of our younger players would have established themselves as stars too. But at the moment those 2 are really our only trade currency. If it was up to me I'd prefer to trade the Victorians first.

You aren't going to get him by offering 2 players not in our best 22 and some low draft picks. And we aren't going to have any top draft picks for the next few years.

Of course they won't want to trade him. But if he says he wants to be traded to Freo when his contract is up, then Melbourne are going to have to work something out. This would be 2 years away though. Can't see any way to get him at the end of 2014.

I'm praying that Roos doesn't turn them around, and they continue to be a complete disaster. Would help in getting him to leave, or at least hold off on signing that contract extension that Melbourne keep dangling in front of him.

I should clarify I was referring to trading for Jesse when he comes out of contract. So we would be looking at a hypothetical for 2 years from now (speculative I know). Hence my suggestion the Crozier and Neale would be worth much more in that time, and our (hopefully late) first rounder would be more of a sweetener. Crozier is a Victorian and Neale is a South Australian so I think that accounts for trading non WA players away. I also think that even if Melbourne are on the way up I can't imagine them being much higher than challenging for the lower half of the 8. I think with our current list model we could still have a team which would compliment hogan very well in that time (considering Fyfe would only be 24).

Screw Hogan, let the Demons have him. Grab three key talls in the draft and develop our own. We have done well recently to get over the messiah syndrome the club was previously crippled by.

Our only hope if at the end of next year or the year after he demands to leave and does not sign a new contract.

If he signs a new contract, he will not come back until he is a free agent.

A 10 yr 10 000 000 dollar contract would actually be better value for hogan, than buddy, considering in 2 years he would probably have 10 years left in him. I would not be strictly opposed to that kind of thing, I'm not sure Bondy would be so keen.

This ship has sailed :(

We needed to get him early, while he was still a supporter more than an actual player.

Once he starts getting games, the bond with teammates will grow, the love for the club will grow and his value will grow instead of just being potential.

Had to make a big play and give up something good this year to get him.

I don't have any issue with his manager being approached tonight with that deal, to keep in his mind for the next two years. The Buddy comparison means we could offer him 15 years at 15 million, crazy numbers.

I'm tipping after this year, they won't trade him.

He'll be like what Fyfe is to us; not in terms of raw skill level but just that special talent who keeps supporters excited about the future and completely indispensable.
Melbourne will be offering him a contract every week. I can't see it happening.

It just means that the offer would be public knowledge for almost 2 years.

1. When does his contract expire?
2. Not if but when he has a good season next year, in all seriousness, why wouldn't we or any club offer a buddy like contract? For example 7mil for 10 years?
3. Meh, this is a long way away, no point putting too much thought and time into it, I'm just hoping for a KPP with our first pick in the draft.
