5 hours not 5 mins, thats around 200 million a day

US is donating about between 35 ande 45 million dollars.

they spend estimated about 177million dollars per day

haliburton has been awarded in excess of 17 billion dollars worth of contracts without tender (******** Cheney's 'special relationship' company where he was the former CEO and still is a sizeable shareholder)

Australian state and federal govts have donated about 50 million dollars so far, we are 1/15 the population, we have a 600 billion with about 150 billion dollar federal budget, the US spends about 600 billion on defence and defence related industries and has about a 2.2 trillion dollar budget with a 10.9 trillion dollar PLUS economy (defence expenditure in 2001 was a mere 370 billion, but in 2004/5 will be about 600 billion!

so yeah they have a lot of cash, but they are in debt to the tune of more than a trillion dollars, i think 1.2 or 1.5 trillion (or an english billion, which is not even used much in england any more)

so, how much cash have you forked over lately?

Funnily enough Bush found a lazy 75 mil to ensure that his man in the Ukraine got up.

(In this case not neccessarliy a bad thing, better than staging a coup (Haiti) or an invasion).

We are talking about the US government, not how much we have donated  i am 15 an don't have really any money so don't start up that **********e ;)

Yeah and the Yanks gave 40% of all such monies donated world wide this year.

What you cant afford $10?

Hope Bush pulls out of giving that clapped out UN any dough and see how far they go out of the goodness of their hearts, along with Corrupt Kofi.

US Economic aid - donor OS:
ODA, $6.9 billion (1997)

(of which about 1/3 goes ONLY to Israel)

US cutting aid

total aid world wide

Economic aid - recipient traditional worldwide foreign aid $50 billion
http://yahooligans.yahoo.com/reference/factbook/263/econom.html
(1997 est.)

http://www.globalissues.org/TradeRelated/Debt/USAid.asp

(this article suggest the USA gives about 16billion p/a in ODA)

This would suggest that the real figure of the US AID is far lower when you take out Israel and its per capita rate one of the lowest, remembering the US economy is around 23% of the WDP, also around 40%? its between 5% and 10% in cash terms and lower when you take out the military component.

Ahhh but the Americans always expect a return on thier investment. If they were so keen on democracy they would encouraging thier 'friends' in Uzbekistan to hold full and free elections.

BTW I as part of the left, hold no brief for either candidate, in fact I could be considered merely an interested observer. We will see just how 'democratic' the victor proves to be in the future.

Powell came out and said today, to the effect, that the US was giving a helping hand and he hope the world muslims would see them as the "Good Guys".

interestingly SL is mainly Budhist sinhala, and hindu tamil, tamil nadu is mainly hindu, thailand is mainly hindu, aceh is a mixture of christian, moslem and budhist, being different from sumatra being mainly moslem with some tribalistic religions, a smattering of budhists and hindus also.

Australian govts have given 50 odd million, australian population have give about 20 million, the brits have upped their donation to about 125 million, I wonder if the US is still sitting on 35 million or has world opinion on their small donation forced them to up it to not be perceived as mean?

lotta press releases from the US, not much action though.

What on earth is this supposed to mean?

Putting aside the fact that you are pseudo-left, what the hell does your sweeping claim to be "of the left" have to do not "holding a brief for either candidate"?

Are you suggesting that it is "of the left" to be aloof from the outcomes of democratic elections?

Or it is "of the left" to not take a side?

You are so transparent! So typical. You are the cliche of the pseudo-left movement.

You annoint yourself "of the left" then proceed to abrogate ANY responsibility, ANY empathy with what is clearly a popular movement for democratic freedom - simply because the USA supports one side!

Here's a newsflash, pseud - Yushenko wants to join the EU. THat's what is meant by "looking to the West". His party wants to cut loose from the State control being witnessed in Russia at the moment. It is a movement that ALL democrats should support.

Your sneering cynicism and abject failure to accept any responsibility for choosing a side is a disgrace. From the very start you've chosen the simple answer of standing on the sidelines and slavering to put the blame for any set-back, any outcome, on the USA.

YOU ARE NOT "OF THE LEFT".

Bush also spent 14 yes FOURTEEN billion dollars in Florida alone last year on relief after the hurricanes good to have your brother in the White House eh Jeb?
To me with the Bush religious nutters and neo con jews in control in the White House it makes me wonder if the world has finally gone over the edge of darkness.

sorry my mistake ;) but still 5 hours thats still **********es me off

All these figures are rubbery, I have not read this story, but generally they include alot of 'sunk' costs. They sometimes include army wages etc that you were going to pay anyway, fuel and spares that some of would be used back in the USA anyway.

well they've been shamed into upping the ante to 350 million.

A truly generous offer, and should be commended.

Aus is sending 60m govt money and another 50m in donations.

total prize pool curently at 1.5 billion AUD I believe, or about 1.2 Billion US.

This doesn't include the deployment of troops, specialist medical and forensic team, military support equipment craft and resources.

I commended Howard on another thread, and now I commend the US.

Powells comments are stupid. Thanks for the correction on Thailand, I should have known better, as I have met thai officials before.

cheers

Dan
