I think Chris Knights would be an ideal sub. It sounds funny, because the trend appears to put impact players, often small guys who can zip around when the game slows down but have you ever noticed that when the game slows down, blokes like Brock McLean and Chris Knights rack up the ball? I think this is due to their superior ability to read the play and get into good spots but unfortunately they struggle when the games at its highest pace.

I believe Knights coming on half way through the 3rd quarter could add a huge amount in terms of clearances, ball use etc when the game is suited to him most.
 
I think you need a player that can run but also who can fit into a role as well. A jack of all trades player but it probly depend on the opponent.
 
I still like Whitey as a sub...still has blistering pace to break the lines late in a game and can kick a ball long...also can handle a tackle...
Always feel that Nahas is more of a nuisance value as a sub...has pace but cant kick/deliver a ball long effectively...and is manhandled like a rag doll...
 
I think Vlastuin (who some have pegged to be the starting sub) should start - he seems to have shown that the occasion and level don't faze him too much (though round 1 will be a massive eye opener for him regardless).

I think White should also start (if selected) - I think he is the kind of guy that would struggle to come on and make an impact if he came on cold after the game has started and needed to adjust to the pace of the game.

Nahas might be a good sub option for round 1. He seems to go in and out of games anyway so his pace might help later in the game (though he has shown some decent form when playing further up the ground and helping move the ball forward.

McDonoghue might be worth a look if he impresses for Coburg, apparently can be very damaging with limited ball use and touches.

Yer I tend to agree. People seem to just name guys soley on the back of being quick. I think Whitey would get the same amount of ball in the last quarter of a match fresh as he would in any other quarter of the match fresh or not. The fact is he is already one of the fastest so he would be regardless. I don't really get it.

Surely slower guys, if playing and able to compete in the AFL despite such a detrimental weakness would thrive when the game slowed down because they obviously have a brilliant football brain. I know a sub breaking the lines can look great but a guy like Knights who can damage by foot and find it 10-15 times in a quarter and half would be preferable to guys like Nahas/White who might get it only 5-8 times but give a bit of dash and maybe kick a goal.

I like this idea, adding some experience to close out a game could be invaluable. He would have to be match fit though, even for 1 & 1/2 qtrs.
 
I'd like to find out what S.Edwards could do as the freshest player on the field.

Be interesting to see if Cadeyn Williams can step up... might be the ideal sub. Appears to have all the skills, play big or small. A longshot this year, but will watch with interest.

Don't be sensible.

What we need is an absolute gun player who, for some reason, we don't put in our run-on side. Then when he comes on at the start of the last quarter, he displays Brownlow-quality form, kicks 5 goals and leads us to a dramatic comeback victory.

Of course, if he's that good we could put him on from the start and win the game more comfortably - but where's the fun in that?

It would be easy if football was so black and white (no pun intended)! The 22nd best player, if there was some ideal ranking system, would not necessarily mean that that particular player was best to come on and only play a quarter regardless of how good they could play a whole game. If on ranking Luke McGuane for instance was the 22nd best player he would be a terrible sub compared to say Sam Lonergan who may be the 23rd best player.

Yep my thoughts exactly about White - he just seems like the type who will give you the same amount of output regardless of the minutes played. He does have a bit of x factor especially when running and carrying the ball - I think a lot of people like the idea of a player who can come in and use pace to break lines.

A player like that would be great a strong defensive team that loves their press and defensive structures (i.e. a Freo) but for a team (that I would argue isn't hugely defensively minded) like Carlton and given they have quite a few rebounder types and seem to like moving the ball quickly, a composed and smart user of the ball who can find space and use the ball well (without buckling to pressure or turning it over) could be a better option.

The last few years, Carlton's midfield has managed to get up in the later stages of the game (perhaps due to more experience and maturity, perhaps due to having a deeper midfield). If we brought on someone with good skills who can bring some experience to help settle the younger players around him when the pressure starts rising, Knights could be a great option as a sub (at least for the round 1 game anyway). Given his seemingly great ability to be a link up player through the midfield, it might even minimise those costly turnovers that can lead to the other team scoring.
 
Given the rookie elevations have been announced, I wouldn't mind seeing Petterd given the sub spot. Can go both forward and back and if need be we have plenty of others that can rotate through the midfield if one of our mids goes down.

Well actually they arent on nuclear subs, the yanks are miles ahead in quietness and engineering. On diesel subs, the russians know their stuff ie the kilo class. The hanks dont do these as they dont have a need. The brits do a diesel pretty good too. Unfortunately funding for the russian navy is nearly non existant now and they scavenge parts from other subs.
 
The Collins disel/electric submarine is a Swedish design...built here...that's probably why it doesnt work properly...
Design fault...it cant carry enough coins onboard for the electric meter box...for fear of sinking...
