Did anyone else hear the John Reid interview on 5AA Monday Night?
Reid suggested that only up to 6 changes would be made to the playing list. Now, taking in the 3 possibly 4 retirements of Carey, Smart, Burns and maybe Turbo Stevens, and the trades of Stenglein and Burton (IF they take place), that would leave only the delisting of 2 to 3 players. This number of delistings wouldn't resonate fear through the playing list for a year that was below par on the field!! Alot of that blame can be attributed to Gary Ayres, BUT IMHO he wasn't the only one that contributed!! I personally think that some players will have "dodged the bullet" this year due to contract arrangements, and the only other change that will occur is on the coaching panel, with Curran heading home to Vic. which would be a loss due to his performance as Backlines coach, which has been the most consistantly performing area of the club!

Thoughts?

Definitely.

Many lucky boys on the list such as Ladhams who haven't deserved their status and wages as AFL footballers over the past couple of seasons yet will stay on.

Correct.

Ladhams is possibly the most annoying of these because he has had such a p*ss poor attitude and peformed accordingly.

He does have talent, but not the desire to deliver it.

He gets another undeserved chance next year. Will he take it?

History suggests not.

I love Brett Burton. He is fabulous. Yes, he does some silly things, but personally I love watching him play.

Not to mention the fact that he thinks he's God's gift to the ladies.

As many have said here - I agree that Burton would be far more useful in attack rahter than the midfield. He shouldn't be traded, but only if they play him properly...

I agree that 6 changes is on the face of it too few - more like 7-10 - but you have to work withint he constraints of the draft. And that is, depending on how many 1-2-3 round picks we pick up in trade week, any furhter delistings will have to be replaced with 4th, 5th or 6th round picks.

Now, it has been rightly suggested that even a 4-5 round pick can be good value if you use it wisely, but that's a die you don't want to roll too often.

Fact is, with an unusually high number of retirements (possibly as many as 5 by the time the dust settles) we are constrained a bit in what we can do with delistings. On the other hand, next year we should have 1 retirement (assuming it's Clarke, and assuming M Stevo goes this year) and there will be more scope.

Maybe that means some players will dodge a bullet. And maybe it means that some of them will save themselves next year, if they realise (or are told) how close they came this year.

From an opposition supporter's perspective, I love seeing Burton play for you guys too. ;) Sure he can occassionally do the spectacular and when he's on, he's dangerous. However, it is his ability to spectacularly stuff things up that detracts from all that ability (eg the attempted mark over Lade on the weekend).

DYERTRIBE - bit stiff on sir bobby? or you think you need someone new?

Took the club as far as it could go - it was time for a change but the whole episode could've been handled a lot better. Going over SBR's head with the Woodgate sale was extremely poor form from Fat Freddie whichever way you look at it, and in hindsight was a clear indication that this decision was made long before last week.

Sir Bobby resurrected the club's fortunes and came ever so close to some silverware but didn't actually land any, eventually losing the dressing room and the confidence of the board - much like Gary Ayres.

Agree with you arrowman, it is no use getting rid of players if you can't replace them with better players. Also I think a change of coach will have saved a few players as they will be given another chance under Neil to prove their worth.

How about this for a trade?

Brett Burton to Melbourne.
Scott Thompson to Port Adelaide.
Damon White to Adelaide.

Win-win-win or not?

you gotta be kidding, 1 of those 3 is not like the others.

1 of them can't even get a **** game.

I don't know how anyone can like Burton, he would have to be the most frustrating, unco player in the squad. He is always trying to ba a hero and goes for the low % plays.

I cringe whenever he gets the ball.

I would be willing to trade hime for a bag of rusty nails, at least we can make stuff with them...

I don't know how anyone can fail to understand his ability to win the ball under all types of pressure.
