This is very frustrating. Not sure why it is happening and it is happening on all computers around the house connected to the network so both wireless and not wireless internet connections.

have a look at this time line with test times top right corner of the pictures.

I really don't understand why it's happening.

I've deleted cookies, internet history, searched for viruses which came up with no problems other than a few warnings.

This is happening on both mac and windows computers - anyone have any suggestions what to do or is it just time to call the service provider?

Cheers.

also,

just tried on Google Chrome and the same thing

my wireless connections are very tight and i'd find it very unlikely if anyone was hacking into them.

Crap as.

Just upgraded our plan to 190gb as well, was being fine for about the first 6 months but this is doing my head in now.

Just did another 2 tests, one after another.

17 mb/ps first one, 0.9 mb/ps the second.

laughable.

With testing the idea is to run as many tests as possible with as few variables as possible... this gives you a benchmark. You can then start to change single variables to compare and isolate potential problems.

So...

1st... always test with the same device for your benchmark. Using different devices only introduces more variables that can mislead you.
2nd... run many tests using the same connection method (ie Wireless or Ethernet etc) before switching to. Say min 5 tests but the more the better.

Next... what type of internat service do you have?

Judging by those figures it appears to be a Cable service. One of the main characteristics of a Cable service is its bandwidth is shared amongst other Cable users on your "line"... so you might be the only person using it and getting speeds of 25Mbps download, but then 10 minutes later 5 other people in your area are using it (downloading at the same time) and it might drop to 5Mbps.

Other factors that people don't seem to realise... especially with ADSL connections is that your own cabling within your house can severely effect your download speeds.

Example... guy I know set his parents up with ADSL2+. They were only just over 2kms away from the exchange but were only getting about 3Mbps d/l which seemed rather low. My colleague then spent a day installing new Cat5 cables and a new 921E2+ ADSL2+ splitter down to their modem and PC. This simply change over saw their d/l speeds jump up to 8Mbps. Straight away an increase of 5Mbps... without even fixing the broken Telstra Box mounted outside the house.. which might increase speeds even further.

So whilst ISP plans might state certain speeds... this means what speed you should be able to get to your PROPERTY... not to your DEVICE. There are still plenty of opportunities on the network with your house where internet quality can degrade.

HTH.
