Hi gang.

Just a quick question .. was having a drunken discussion with friends last night and the topic of road rules came up for some reason. And there was a question floating about .. how long do you leave the indicator on when you're changing lanes? 1 flash? two flashes?? 3 flashes?

Discuss.

In the driving test, they assess you for safe merging and changing lanes. One of the conditions is that after you have changed lanes, you stop indicating on or before 3 flashes.

Usually depends on how far away the cars behind me are. If it reasonably close but I need to squeeze in or something, I'll leave it on up to four flashes and wait to see that they've reacted. If the car is way back and there's no one else much around I just flash a couple seconds before I'm ready to move over.

You have to have it blinking for at least 3 seconds (around 5 blinks) before you change lanes.

I chose 3 flashes without reading the entire poll (impatience).

I leave the indicator on for about 3 flashes (assuming I can pass safely immediately), then change lanes, then once I'm fully in, turn off.

I'll let it flash for longer if there is a car nearby and I can't cross immediately.

Depends.
People in melbourne are ****s, and if you indicate you can often expect people to delibrately cut you off from changing lanes. So sometimes you're forced to do the quick blink of the indicator as you're changing lanes.

But generally I like to indicate adequately before changing lanes. I'll do my mirror & head checks, indicate, and do another head check before changing lanes. Indicator will stay on until i'm at least 75% into the next lane.

Road rules is until you're safely and fully in the lane. Not that anyone does that anyway.

You're lucky anyone indicates period these days.

It's so bloody dangerous (esp on a freeway and say both cars were to move into the middle lane from the left and right)...and constantly i see cars not indicating.

Yeah its like so ****ing hard to do, click a lever down with ya finger.

I wish I was a cop. I'd bloody ****ing book everyone.

-end of rant-

.

I dont cut people off.

Unless they are ****wits, trying to pass in the left lane.. or even the median strip. Then they are on their own, and no... i wouldnt let them in.

Off topic.. but on the way to Geelong my dad actually got BLASTED.. not lights flashed, but tooted, for doing the speed limit in a road works zone- in the middle lane.

God seriously, some people are major assholes who need to be punched in the head.

-end of second rant-
:D

Well in Sydney indicators are optional! The number of people who think they don't need to use them is mind boggling.

Agree with triplejdude - the road rule makes perfect sense but so many people don't apply them. The number of people who change lanes when it is not safe to do so (by pushing thier way in) makes a mokery of the rule.

But agree with the 3 flashes thing....

I check to see that its clear to change lanes, then put my indicator on and only turn it off once I am fully in the lane. There's no set minimum in SA I believe, but when I was learning I had to indicate for 5 flashes I think and only turn it off once I was in the other lane.

I always give people plenty of warning that I'm changing lanes and as my Dad taught me, if you don't warn them they're never going to let you in. He was a pretty crap driver...so am I....but we are polite.

As for not doing it, I remember my brother saying on the freeway one day that the Porsche 911 we were looking at didn't come with indicators. I couldn't believe the 100k plus car wouldn't come with indicators and it looked like it had indicators but yep, you guessed it, he changed lanes and by golly those indicators weren't there! Not a bad get from my prick of a brother. :D

Normally until I'm close to fully in the lane I'm changing to.

Can't stand plebs who start indicating once they've started to change lanes.

My car has a setting on the indicators for changing lanes and overtaking where it goes on for three flashes only, so three flashes for me.
