Installing Windows over Linux?

My PC arrived today, but I chose not to have them install the operating system as I wished too based on what a few friends said. I ordered my Operating System today and expect it within the next 10 days (should get it next week or the week after). I was thinking of installing the free version of Linux so that I could use the desktop, but I was wondering what to do when the Windows turns up? Do I just put it in and it will over-write the Linux or what happens?

You should be able to use the partition manager with your Linux OS to split the drive into a Linux partition such as ext4, a swap partition for your Linux install and a ntfs partition for windows.

Linux creates 2 partitions (from memory) when it installs so you will end up with partitions.

If you wish to dual boot then just run windows installer and it will ask you that during the install...

Otherwise if you want to blow the linux install away when you install W7, then as you go through the install you will get to the stage where it asks you what Hard Drive you want to install it on (it might come up with some blurb about there being another OS installed) down the bottom of that page there is an option for advanced options or something along those effects..this will enable you to format the drive first..

Install W7 then when thats done, download this http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html and install it.

This app will allow you to clean up your partitions once W7 is installed

I use Ubuntu 10.10 and virtualbox Win7.. was pretty easy to install, just make sure you use full version of Virtual box, not vb OSE which doesnt have USB support..
