I'm ignoring his social work because that is not what the statue is about.

With all due respect to Stynes, he was only selected to have a statue because he died of cancer in a public, emotional environment.

He's already been memorialised in countless awards, programs, etc.

Now he's got a statue at the MCG before more deserving people.

Can't quote them verbatim but meant to be for someone whose main sporting achievements were based at the ground and brought the crowds to the ground, has to be Australian (so someone like Viv R is out), is not meant to be influenced by anything from outside the sporting arena (hence Jim's charity work not meant to count). Sporting achievements first and bolstered by anything done in the betterment or promotion of that sport post playing retirement. Hence KB's coaching, rules of the game committee and SEN radio time focusing on promotion of the FL would all count hence he is such a strong candidate. Someone like Plugga and Tucky senior don't count as strongly as their home games were not MCG based. Read it somewhere about the same time as the KB thing came out, would have to search again to find it.

if thats the location of the statue now, then that is disgraceful. JD's statue needs to be in pride of place near the ground where the players can see it during training and be inspired, or be facing the masses as they are entering his beloved ground. to have it up against a wall is blasphemy. this is RFC supporters Mecca, and needs to be treated as the shrine it is.

in regards to KB's statue - he has done more for football at the g then most people have. had he coached the tigers for a few more years and got them into finals this would be a non topic. the statue must happen. and it must be in his traditional pose of dropping the ball before being tackled to win a free kick or brushing his combe-over back into place .

Yeah same. If it wasn't for the MCG rule (which apparently are not important going by Jimmy) i'd like to see them branch out a bit and celebrate a few more sports too. Rod Laver would be a good one for Tennis, Johnny Warren for soccer (though he is from NSW so i'd have no problem with not being picked), Andrew gaze for basketball and maybe one day in the future Billy slater. Probably need a few more female sports stars too, i'd say Freeman but she is more associated with the Sydney Olympics.
