My vote 1 is Adcock. Vote 2 is Clark, Merrett, Adcock and Rockliff get 2 weeks each. Drummond needs to focus on rehab.

I love Blacky and he would be an oustanding captain, however he is no longer part of the leadership group and for this reason the interim captain should come from the current leadership group.

Adcock would be my choice

Interesting situation.

Black and Power would appear to be the best choices, but neither of them are in the leadership group any longer (although, that is merely by name and they are still mentoring the younger players).

I guess out of the others, if I had to choose one, then I'd have Adcock in the lead. However, the idea of rotating the duties between the deputies could be a good option as well.

At least Merrett's form in Round 1 was more befitting of a leader than his performances from last season.

I'm hearing a 'Rocky, Rocky' chant in my head.

Seriously though, I think they will probably rotate it between Adcock and Merrett given they are now the senior vice captains. Personally I would give Adcock the role on his own.

I also wouldn't object to Black and/or Power being given the role (even if they did just step down from the leadership group).

as black is no longer in the leadership group, he cannot be considered.

i would rotate the two senior vice-captains, ie, merrett & adcock.

I think Black and Power leaving the leadership group is irrelevant. This year we looked to the future and got some youngsters in the leadership group. Brown's long term injury changes things, and i think Black should be skipper. You simply just can't ignore a player like Black as captain. The youngsters will get their chance, we need some solid leadership for the next 8-10 weeks.

You can't have a leadership group and then appoint an interim captain from outside that group.

Merrett or Adcock get my vote, either rotating or pick one and back them for a few weeks.

Black would be a great captain, so to Power, but it just doesn't fit now they chose to step down from the leadership group.

Surprisingly on Footy Classified, yes they actually spoke about the Lions, they had this discussion and Black got a lot of support, especially from Caro, noting that whilst not in the leadership group, that he should be captain in these unusual circumstances. I have to agree entirely...Black it is for me.

This is a very sensitive and delicate matter. Group dynamics and culture are created by the individuals that make up the whole. The club needs to be very careful in the decisions it makes because one wrong move can be very costly in many ways. The impact to the group may be irreparable if it's not handled correctly.

Whilst Black and Power are deserving of the honour they are no longer our future. Both have had the Captain mantle previously and have honoured it with respect and dignity. However this is Power's last year on the list and possibly Black's as well.

Both made the correct decision to step away from the leadership group and give others the opportunity to take up leadership responsibilities. Nothing will be gained by ignoring the official leadership group and bringing back Black or Power. Black and Power can still exert their authority on the field and act as mentors to the individuals and the group off field.

Appointing Black or Power now, the only thing that it will achieve is demonstrate the club does not trust the current officially designated leaders and does not have belief in their abilities to lead us into the future. Looking back is the worst thing to do under the current circumstance when so much work has been done to revitalise the group and the club.

IMO the most logical decision to make is rotate the captain among the current leadership group until Brown comes back to take his rightful ownership of the title. This will demonstrate that the club has total belief in the players chosen to lead us in to the future; it will provide enormous experience to the younger members of the group and build loyalty, commitment and an unflinching focus of future success.

Whilst many may argue that Rockliff and Clark are too young and have not yet earned the honour, many a young person when leadership has been thrust upon them have risen to the challenge.

In conclusion IMO looking at the long term benefits to the club far outweigh the short term quick fix solution in this instance.

I reckon rotate it each week really I don't think the toss means much.Simon Black and Power always going to be the wiser minds, Rockliff well he wears his heart on his sleeve and always has something to say to try lift the boys from what I seen in the NAB cup and challenge.Merrett had a lot of voice from the crowd yelling out at players so you could go anyway.

If Black takes up the spare role in the leadership group, then most certainly It should be him. However if not, then Merrett and Adcock to rotate on a weekly basis.

I have read all the responses, but I still stick with the OP. Simon Black for me. These are exceptional circumstances. With the loss of JB we are looking down the barrel & Black & Power are the only 2 with the seniority, respect and credibility to lead us out of it, IMO.

Whilst the rest of our leadership group are the future, none is ready to take the role on now. To have a rotating captaincy now is to have a rudderless ship & will stint the growth of our new players.

Simon Black is a triple premiership player, Brownlow medallist and universally acknowleged champion of the game. IIRC he was voted "player of the noughties". He is widely lauded for his proffessionalism and one who sets the highest standards.

When Brownie is there, Simon can contribute from the background. But now he is not - we need Blackey to take command. We are just so lucky to have him in our time of need.

Looking from the outside, we have no real idea of the group dynamic or interpersomal relationships in the group. But, IMO, Simon Black would not have publicly commented on the possibility of him leading if he did not believe it was in the Lions best interest. And this is from one of the most humble champions the game has known.

My heart says I'd love to see Blacky get the gig. My head says irel spouted exactly the thoughts running through my head and it should go down that road. Unless something happens like the leadership group go to Voss with the idea of instating Blacky as captain temporarily off their own bats.

The captain spot isn't just some mark of respect, it's an important job in the team. We have opted for a young leadership group this year, to start training up our leaders for tomorrow, but that leadership group still comes under one of, if not the best captain in the history of everything.

I can not see how having Black step back into that role would hurt the young ones in the leadership group. Simple fact is, most of them aren't ready to captain a side, that is why we are fast tracking them. To say that Black and Power will still provide help on the field doesn't make sense to me. If you made Rocky the captain for example, how crap is it going to be having Black step in on field and basically assume control when needed. IMO, that is going to do more damage than not selecting one of the existing leadership group.

If you have to absolutely explain and lock it then, then you can say in Brown's leave, Black was elevated to the leadership group, then he was selected as captain by being the best canidate for the job of the leadership group.

It is just too much of an important role to give to the young ones at this stage in their development.
