I thought it might be interesting to look at the recent history of interim coaches.

1996, Footscray - Alan Joyce sacked. Terry Wallace interim coach. Result: Wallace retained.
1997, Melbourne - Neil Balme sacked. Greg Hutchison interim coach. Result: Neale Daniher appointed new coach.
1997, Richmond - Robert Walls sacked. Jeff Geischen interim coach. Result: Geischen retained.
1998, Brisbane - John Northey sacked. Roger Merrett interim coach. Result: Leigh Matthews appointed new coach.
2001, Fremantle - Damien Drum sacked. Ben Allan interim coach. Result: Chris Connolly appointed new coach.
2001, St Kilda - Malcom Blight sacked. Grant Thomas interim coach. Result: Thomas retained.
2002, Sydney - Rodney Eade sacked/quit. Paul Roos interim coach. Result: Roos retained.
2002, Footscray - Terry Wallace quit. Peter Rohde interim coach (for one game). Result: Rohde retained.

And do you know the only thing that separates the coaches kept from the coaches dismissed? Hutchison, Merrett and Allan all guided their teams to the wooden spoon and were chopped. Whilst the others all avoided a last place finish, and all were retained.

So barring a complete disaster, I'd say that's a pretty good sign for Neil Craig's chances of a contract beyond this season.

Or will Craig have to do more than just avoid the wooden spoon?? :p

2004, Adelaide - Gary Ayres sacked/quit. Neil Craig interim coach. Result: ?

But all those clubs minus Brisbane, Melbourne, Freo and Sydney (wanted to spend a load on Plough, reneged after clear player support for Roos) were poverty-stricken and probably couldn't afford to bring in a new name even if they wanted to.

We have the money to attract and afford the very best candidates available rather than just accept dregs.

Dave,

have to say that is pretty interesting. I never would have thought so many guys got the gig like that.

food for thought.

Food for thought??

I find it absolutely scary!!

As dyertribe says, we have the money to get the best. IMO Neil Craig is not the best candidate out there.

I would be absolutely p*ssed off with the club if it took the weak option and just appointed the interim fort-holding coach if he goes half okay.

It's time for this club to use the big broom and show some professionalism, rather than forever taking the easy soft option.

Agree 5000%. We don't need a featherduster (ie. Craig). We need that bloody big broom!

Bump.

2004, Adelaide - Gary Ayres sacked/quit. Neil Craig interim coach. Result: Craig retained.
2004, Hawthorn - Peter Schwab sacked. Donald McDonald interim coach. Result: Eade or Ayres or someone else will be the new coach.

The wooden spoon theory holds true!

I think there is a change of coach for the wooden spoon teams, because a complete cleanout has been required. IMO, whilst we will not finish bottom, a cleanout is still required. Need some fresh blood, so hope like heck we atleast get new assistants (& not Nunan, Flynn, Hart, etc).
