G'day guys,

I recently made the move to the fine state of Victoria from WA. I got sick of hearing about these mythical beings called taxis and paying $35 for a coffee so I thought why not, but i digress.

I have racked up a couple parking fines in my time here as seems to be the way over here and was curious as to the jurisdiction of Victorian councils.

As I still hold a WA license and my car is registered in WA I was wondering if the councils actually had any power to do anything if I chose not to pay these fines.

I know that speeding fines can mean I lose my WA license as there is an interstate information sharing agreement between the police but does anyone know if a council has access to any of this?

My first parking fine was a few months ago, I am yet to receive a reminder to pay notice which I assume is because they can't access my interstate address details.

Hypothetically this means if someone took the ticket off my windscreen I would have no idea I had got it.

Can anyone shed any light on this or share stories of their own? Cheers

New South Welshman living in Melbourne. Got one awhile back, paid it, got another soon after, havent paid it, havent heard anything about it (been about 4-5 months now).

There's also a limit on how long you can use your WA licence if you're living there permanently. 3 months or something I think then you have to get a Vic licence.

I'm asking the question on the assumption the police and Victorian councils are very seperate entities. I'm aware of the laws in regards to my WA license in Victoria and I know about the 3 month law but all that is in regards to speeding fines and the police.

I can't see how a police officer would know about my parking fines and how a council could find my address or know who I am. I could be way off the mark but was just seeing if anyone knew for sure.

And my address for all intents and purposes is still up-to-date, everything in my name is still sent there but is forwarded to Vic when it arrives.

In WA the outstanding fines are sent to the Fines Enforcement Registry who are the link to police records and suspend your licence and all that. How that works in an interstate context I don't know, but you'd certainly expect to at least get some sort of letter in the first instance so hold out for that and see if it comes.

Don't pay anything until you have received some sort of final notice. Just ride it out; they can't do shit.

An arrest warrant for a $40 parking fine.:p

No normally it something like 2 months to pay or another $20, a further period and another $80+, then the Sheriff who could find you and can clamp or take your car. How long is the back log who knows, probably very long and can they be bothered to find your new address for a $40 fine I don't know.

You will have to pay.

Speeding tickets have gone national. If you have fines in another state they can now pick them up (if your licenses are linked). Next time you go into the Motor Registry they will try link your licenses.

"Have you lived interstate?
"So this is you?"
Great, we'll link them together.

Only a matter of time before parking fines get connected.

Ha. I love this arrogant 'the authorities can't touch me' attitude. They can put out arrest warrants.

Ahahahahaha. Come on, do you really, truly think they will be issuing an arrest warrant any time soon? What's wrong with waiting until they've actually given him some sort of documentation relating to the alleged heinous acts?

A lot of what I'm about to say depends on which council and the luck of the draw you have too.

A police officer will not know jack about your parking fines, they don't chase parking fines in Victoria at all. However the councils do have access to basic information about your registration. And if you have been living here for a while you are required to change your licence and failure to do so has from time to time being taken to court so be careful here.

However most councils forward their fines on to Victoria's civic compliance who's job it is to ensure fines are paid

It is feasible will happen when you change your address on your license is civic compliance will become aware of it through their vicroads records which do communicate with your traffic authority back in WA. If you continue to ignore civic compliance they may take it to the perin court and force a payment order, ignoring this could eventually see the sheriff's office become involved which than can escalate into either a asset confiscation or a short spell inside for ignoring a payment order.

The above may not happen and they may give up at any step but nor is it impossible depending on how much they would like to chase their fines.

If it's the city of Melbourne or St Kilda they may push it further as they collect big revenue from parking fines and don't want to lose the golden goose. If it's an outer council they like to save money and use their own lawyers - there the ones who give up the easiest.

Your best bet when you first move somewhere is play the tourist line - you were all confused about where you could park and you needed to meet your mother who came over from the airport and it all ended up so confusing. - works.
