I've got a 15Gb iPod and I love it. Don't leave home without it.
I've currently got 1300 songs on it, and it's only one third full, which means I have about 10Gb space to use as a portable hard drive.

How is that a beat-up?
It's puncturing any number of unfounded rumours about the iPod, and says lots of nice things about Apple while it does it.
The only things on there that could be considered a beat-up are the questions, which they are answering from a pro-Apple perspective.

I have a 40GB iPod. The battery lasts about 2-3 days, with I suppose about 2-3 hours of use per day...so maybe 4-8 hours straight use.

What I should have said is this:
iPod is a great product, no doubt - there are two issues that keep coming up, though.
One is the battery. Check out http://ipodbatteryfaq.com/ for more on that.
The other is the fact that it's quite expensive in comparison to similar products - but a BMW is expensive compared to a Toyota, too.

I've had a 20G iPod for a few weeks now (which I love), and what I've noticed is that initially the day to day battery life was pretty poor, but as you kept charging it, it improved dramatically.
As for the long-term battery life, well as it says on the 'batteryfaq' site an iPod battery is meant to last around 500-600 full charges (from dead battery to completely charged). If you only use it a 2-4 of hours a day, then it should give you at least 6-7 years of life.
Definitely worth it IMO.

I would first look at competing HDD players, such as the iriver 120/140 20GB/40GB players. They have many more features than the ipods at a similar price, such as optical in/out, ogg V support, a lithium polymer battery etc. etc.

USB connection.

Can't say too much about the Ipod, as I only briefly used one - and the only thing that I didn't like was that dial thing you've got to use to go up and down menus but you should have a look at the Nomad Zen NX Jukebox. I've got one of them and I'm very happy.

Yeh I got one of those too. Very happy with it. Bit bigger than an Ipod, but still a damn fine gadget!
I got one 20gig had it for about hrm id say 6-7mnths now and the battery has gotten slightly worse. However I think it's worth it because it is so incredably easy to transfer songs.
