Look? Maybe... Depend on NO! We shouldnt get wound up in this pool as many other team are bleeding this pond dry. This has been succesful because only a few clubs have been looking and they therefor get a better look in.

we kinda had an Irish recruit last year, he was from over there but he had been living in australia for approximatley 3 years, we had him on the rookie list at the start of 2006, his name was Cathal Corr, played a few games in the v.f.l but that was about it, i saw him play 3 games he was pretty good, just couldnt get a game because there was no position in the v.f.l to play. :(

Thousands of Aussie kids could be getting a chance to play AFL at the highest leel...Look in our own backyard first I say:)

the problem with getting an irish recruit is, we pick him, then the same thing might happen to us as it did to the lions, the recruited a irish kid who had just turned 18, he was in Australia for a 2months and got homesick and went back home, if that happens to us we can loose a good pick, lions lost a pick, because the choose to let him go back home

It's a gimmick, plain and simple. Yes, the Maggies (or whoever) had a bit of luck with it this last year, but really, as panthers has pointed out, we've no shortage of good players here already... and we kicked their butt when we played them in international rules anyway.

The talent pool in Australia will only fill the needs of a certain number of clubs.
We have made the process more demanding and exacting in order to help identify talent within the Australian pool that might otherwise have been missed. Recruiters can readily identify talent in other pools (Ireland, Africa, etc.), but the expense involved may be too much for most clubs. Also the home country may not appreciate the talent drain.

Clubs like Carlton and Collingwood have benefitted from the Irish experience, but their actions are more like strip mining a foreign country's talent than an approach that benefits both parties.

The AFL must step in and set some guidelines which targets the long term benefit of the player recruited without damaging the relationship with the government or sporting bodies of the country involved.

Furthermore - the current set up where only a few clubs are availing themselves of this opportunity is another example of clubs avoiding the equalisation measures set in place through a loophole.

The AFL recognise the limited nature of the domestic talent pool and they have been constructive in expanding it through investments in grassroots and talent identification programs and the like, but to them allowing the clubs to rape another country of its best and brightest is cheaper and easier.

You dont use picks for international players. Theyre a 'freebie'
That kid that left Brissy and was rated higher than Begley is back for Carlton along with 2 more gun Irishmen this year and a further 3 over the next 2 years.. including a couple of young prodigies.

Its a case of the quick or the dead...

Geez I guess you can only hope they're as good as Setanta O'Hailpin then?

saints dont have the resources at the moment to invest in research into irish talent.

we are hard pressed to cover local and interstate competitions and juniors.

if we had money to invest in O/S i would rather we spent in on other issues first.

I say we go to somewhere in Africa to get a few of those massively tall, fit and athletic types for a ruckman...
One word... Masai. Tall, lanky, spend all that time jumping... AND they live off their cows' milk and blood - tough as!

If that is Brendan Quigley you are talking about, he is coming back to play. For Carlton.

I would rather money spent on the medical department, than say supply additional funds to recruiting.

I suppose we could have used a first round pick on one of the following.

Brooks
Watts
McQualter...:thumbsu:

Nah Luke Livingston has all of those covered pal. How's Sam Cranage going? Cain Ackland worth all that coin? Your coach won a game yet?

I don't think enoughs done with Union. Most private schools play it to a very high level and then their is only 4 professional teams to play for and even then you don't get a look in till your 22ish because they want you to have size. Most fullbacks 5/8's can kick well and all the outside backs have size and pace, 2nd Rowers are tough and usually over 6'6" maybe the odd ruck option

The advantage they have over the Irish is that it is a contact sport and tackling skills and strength would be excellent

Good come back...

We didnt use our second round pick on Ackland..:thumbsu:
Geez those early picks have been thrown around like millionaires.

Setanta is a rookie listed player who cost us the last rookie list pick.. and he is doing nicely.

Watch out for Aisake this year... hes ready...:thumbsu:

Excellent point - look at Sammy Gilbert: so many of his great attributes, such as shrugging off tackles, come out of his rugby background.
