Is James Bond one person?

This may seem like an odd question but I'd be interested to know how people actually view this.

Given some of the comments i have seen reported in respect of Idris Elba being in the running for the next Bond, I'd be interested to know how people view the character.

From my personal point of view, I work on the basis that in a world where M has become a woman and Q used to work in the ministry of silly walks, that James Bond 007, is actually the code name, (agent designation) afforded one of a number of secret agents and that the reason the white englishman now using that code name does not look like an octogenarian scotsman is because they aren't the same guy.

Have I missed something?

I someone about to tell me that the phantom actually is 400 years old?

If he can play Heimdall he can play James Bond in my opinion. There has been very little family backstory given to James Bond ever and it doesn't really matter to me, but I think your explanation is as fine a retcon as any - not that it really needs it.

As a longtime comic reader, I have seen so many reinventions and retcons of history while attempting to stick to an idea of "cannon" that has made suspension of disbelief even more difficult. Some of my greatest joy has also come from sticking to core principles of a concept for inspiration, but playing with everything else, and completely ignoring "cannon". The problems are caused when they try to jam a bunch of individual stories into a single continuity and it becomes more and more absurd over time.

I view each new Bond actor as effectively a reset of Bond. It was explicit for Craig, but there's such stylistic differences between each that continuity isn't even worth trying to trace. There's also not really an overarching theme and only M and Q are really recurring characters played by the same actors - and that's despite the Judi Dench M persisting over the explicit reboot.

ok, that works too except...

Time lords (or those we have experience of) tend towards the chaste. Tom Baker's doctor traipsed around the galaxy in the seventies/ eighties with a scantily clad amazon barbarella wannabe and never once tried it on with her.

The master, upon becoming ruler of earth did not establish a Harem of super models, (as would have been appropriate for his position) instead preffering to make everyone look like him.

Mr Bond, is not, in my experience so... reserved.

I've always preferred that theory (not the Timelord one, matwt73's original premise) but Skyfall gave Craig's Bond a specific back story tying him to the name. Could yet be explained away of course but it was an interesting direction for them to go.

Its a code name assigned to different agents over time. The back story of Skyfall links Craig 007 to that specific back story. Hope the new movie is as good as Skyfall. They are still churning out Bond books even though Fleming died years ago.
