Is the Coleman medal still relevant or only compensation for minnows?

Coleman medals - a valuable metric or a meaningless bauble? Sure back in the days of Dick Lee, Gordon Coventry and even John Coleman a leading goalkicker award meant something but today I say it’s the latter.

Allow me to present my evidence:

1. Tony 'Piggy' Lockett
281 games across 2 clubs, all time leading goal kicker with 1,360 goals, 4 Colemans. 0 flags

2. Lance 'Spuddy' Franklin
After winning 2 flags at the wHoREks, accepted a godfather offer to go to $hitney where he played in 3 GFs. Added 172 games, 486 goals, and 2 more Colemans to his resume. 0 flags

3. CarLOLton
Have 2 Coleman medallists on their list. Between them they have 264 games, 543 goals and 3 Colemans. 0 flags and can barely win a final

4. Jesse 'Bogan' Hogan
2024 Coleman medallist. 168 games at 3 clubs. 366 goals. 0 flags

5. The current 2025 Coleman leaders


Only Fold Coast are currently in the Top 8 and we know they won't be there come the end of the year

At least it gives minnow clubs like GWS and the bLOSErs something to get excited about I suppose

it’s better to have a forward line that’s all kicking goals than solely relying on a single target up forward.

in west coast’s 2018 grand final year, darling, kennedy, cripps and lecras all kicked 30+ throughout the season.

in 2023, mihocheck, elliot & hill all has 30+ between them, with the pies midfield squad kicking plenty too.

good teams have a good forward, but winning teams have a string of solid options.
