Collingwood star Nathan Buckley has been severely reprimanded by the club after refusing to wear a black armband, in their upcoming match against Brisbane, following the death of President Eddie McGuire’s 15 year old cat, Miffy.
“Although the rest of the team were enthusiastic to show support for Eddie in his time of grief I personally felt that the time has come for someone to take a stand on this issue.” a clearly agitated Buckley said yesterday.
“When I was a kid the wearing of one was a significant and commented upon event and was reserved for rare occasions. These days it seems the death, near death, sickness or bankruptcy of anyone vaguely associated with the club immediately signals the trainer’s assistant to shoot down to the local hardware shop to buy a ten pack of Nitto black PVC tape” adding “and unfortunately when one player decides to wear one the rest of the team capitulates and does the same in the name of “team bonding”
Buckley went on “the whole thing has got out of hand with almost every player in every club sporting one every week, I even saw a Port Adelaide player wearing two last weekend. It has reached the point where the unfortunate “non-armband” wearing player haves to deal with jibes like “What are you so happy about prick?” and “Uncaring bastard!”. I mean….. where will it end
